{"id":15656,"date":"2021-07-14T15:26:14","date_gmt":"2021-07-14T15:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ci02881be370002548"},"modified":"2021-07-14T15:26:14","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T15:26:14","slug":"compass-nuclear-power-bitcoin-mining","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/business\/compass-nuclear-power-bitcoin-mining","title":{"rendered":"Compass Partners With Oklo For Fission-Powered Bitcoin Mining"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p>Compass Mining, a <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/guides\/bitcoin-mining\">bitcoin mining<\/a> hardware and hosting provider, has entered a 20-year partnership with advanced fission company Oklo to mine bitcoin with nuclear power according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20210714005433\/en\/Oklo-and-Compass-Secure-20-Year-Commercial-Partnership-to-Launch-Advanced-Fission-Powered-Bitcoin-Mining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOklo\u2019s advanced fission powerhouses will provide clean, reliable and affordable baseload power for Compass\u2019 Bitcoin mining machines, starting in the early 2020s,\u201d per the release. \u201cOklo is committed to supplying at least 150 [megawatts] MW of clean power to Compass in the first phase of this partnership, helping drive sustainability of Bitcoin mining practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The release also noted that Oklo\u2019s powerhouses, which turn nuclear waste into \u201cclean\u201d energy, are scalable and that it could add additional capacity to increase <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/tags\/compass-mining\">Compass\u2019 mining<\/a> capacity in the future. And it\u2019s possible such a project could incentivize the broader use of nuclear energy in the future as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCryptocurrency mining offers promising pathways to accelerate the deployment of clean energy technologies, and Oklo is positioned to respond to commercial demands by offering end-users the convenience of buying clean, reliable and cost-effective power they can rely on,\u201d Jacob DeWitte, CEO of Oklo, said in the release.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes at a time when bitcoin\u2019s energy use, and its coal-powered basis in much of China specifically, has come under scrutiny from environmentally-concerned critics. Much of this criticism appears misinformed, with the Bitcoin network emitting <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/business\/bitcoin-vs-financial-sector-energy-use\">less than 5% of the legacy financial sector\u2019s carbon emissions<\/a> by some estimates. But it seems to have motivated numerous projects to mine bitcoin using renewable energy sources, now including Compass.<\/p>\n<p>A larger exodus by bitcoin miners from China in the face of regulatory scrutiny is likely to increase the proportion of clean energy bitcoin mining further.
