{"id":12717,"date":"2021-12-06T22:25:27","date_gmt":"2021-12-06T22:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ci02941488e0082594"},"modified":"2021-12-06T22:25:27","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T22:25:27","slug":"jack-dorsey-spiral-presents-the-lightning-dev-kit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/business\/jack-dorsey-spiral-presents-the-lightning-dev-kit","title":{"rendered":"Jack Dorsey\u2019s Spiral Announces The Lightning Dev Kit"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><ul>\n<li>Jack Dorsey\u2019s Spiral has published a short film on its Lightning Dev Kit project.<\/li>\n<li>LDK is a library that abstracts low-level logic of the Lightning Network away, enabling developers to build a node more easily.<\/li>\n<li>The project had already borne fruit before this announcement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Spiral, a Square subsidiary focused on Bitcoin development, has formally presented its Lightning Development Kit (LDK) in a short film published on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lightning Development Kit is a way to easily integrate instant bitcoin payments into any application,\u201d said Conor Okus, project manager at Spiral, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oOT78Bgy1Qw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">film<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Spiral <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spiralbtc\/status\/1467909217378045959?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> it had been working on LDK for the past couple of years. The project is a flexible Lightning implementation geared towards developers who want to integrate Bitcoin\u2019s Lightning Network into their applications frictionlessly. The <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/lightningdevkit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">library<\/a> is available in the Rust and Swift programming languages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen our team formed, we went out and interviewed dozens of wallet projects and developers,\u201d Steve Lee, lead at <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/business\/jack-dorsey-block-spiral-focused-on-bitcoin\">Spiral<\/a>, said in the film. \u201cWhat we learned is that they were having a lot of problems adding Lightning Network capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The LDK abstracts low-level Lightning logic away, removing barriers for implementing the Lightning Network and allowing developers to focus on their applications\u2019 inner workings. Programmers can then seamlessly leverage a flexible implementation of Bitcoin\u2019s layer-2 protocol to plug into the scaling network. Once implemented, LDK enables instant bitcoin payments on games, apps, and other Bitcoin applications.<\/p>\n<p>The project had already borne fruit before this announcement. In July, Blue Wallet <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/technical\/bluewallet-lightning-implementation\">announced<\/a> a mobile implementation of the Lightning Network based on LDK. The rn-ldk leverages Spiral\u2019s implementation to bring an open-source, lightweight Lightning node to React Native, a popular framework for mobile apps.
