Developers, investors, and interested observers pour in from around the world to take part in the keynote speeches and side conversations that are propelling blockchain technology forward.<br \/>\nThis is one of the reasons that <a href=\"https:\/\/blockchainatcolumbia.com\/\">Blockchain Columbia\u2019s LedgerFest<\/a>, taking place February 15th at Columbia University\u2019s School of Business, stands apart from this rest. It\u2019s the university\u2019s first blockchain and cryptocurrency conference.<br \/>\nAlthough the conference is open to the public, Blockchain Columbia is a student-driven blockchain conference that\u2019s meant to be both educational and inspirational, while featuring some of the most notable names in tech.<\/p>\n<h4>What\u2019s in a Name?<\/h4>\n<p>While other blockchain conferences are hosted in large hotels in prominent cities around the world, LedgerFest is situated at one of the most prestigious universities in the world that features a student-run <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/columbia-university-blockchain-lab\/introducing-the-columbia-blockchain-lab-ebffeb5ecd5f\">blockchain lap<\/a> that\u2019s developing the next generation of decentralized products. Like the university\u2019s blockchain lab, Blockchain Columbia is focused on research, education, and development.<br \/>\nTo put it simply, there is a lot of substance surrounding this conference.<br \/>\nIn this way, the setting is reflective of one of the conference\u2019s primary purpose &#8211; to educate the next generation of blockchain innovators.<br \/>\nAs Nir Kabessa, president of Blockchain at Columbia, explains,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;LedgerFest is Columbia University&#8217;s first blockchain conference. Its main purpose is to provide students with the access and network to educate themselves and participate in decentralized ecosystems as developers, researchers, and users.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, just because Blockchain Columbia is education-centered, doesn\u2019t mean that it\u2019s lacking the big-name recognition of other conferences. IBM, which is a prominent supporter of the Columbia\u2019s blockchain initiatives through <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.columbia.edu\/press-releases\/columbia-ibm-center-blockchain-data-transparency\">their joint blockchain accelerator center<\/a>, is sponsoring the event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66973\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66973\" style=\"width: 263px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-66973 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/35.153.200.241\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/first.png\" alt=\"David Post, the managing director of IBM\u2019s blockchain accelerator\" width=\"263\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/first.png 263w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/first-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/first-80x80.png 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66973\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Post, the managing director of IBM\u2019s blockchain accelerator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Columbia University\u2019s blockchain lab plays a prominent role in IBM\u2019s blockchain accelerator, which strives to support and nurture both early and mid-stage blockchain-focused projects. <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ibm.com\/2018-11-19-IBM-and-Columbia-University-Launch-Two-Accelerator-Programs-for-Blockchain-Startups\">According to David Post<\/a>, the managing director of IBM\u2019s blockchain accelerator,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhat is also needed to truly bring about this sea change is the right technology and expertise which is why IBM is working with Columbia to help give these early- and mid-stage founders a way to build enterprise-grade networks that can move blockchain innovation forward.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the university setting, some of these projects are already bearing fruit. For example, users developed a decentralized voting tool on Ethereum for student council elections that was advised by Ronghui Gu, founder of Certik.<br \/>\nAlready more than 50 officers are running and maintaining Blockchain at Columbia initiatives, which has made open source contributions to Ethereum, Hyperledger, EOS, and more.<br \/>\nThis aura of advancement is the dominant ethos of LedgerFest.<\/p>\n<h4>A Packed Conference Agenda<\/h4>\n<p>Blockchain at Columbia features a deluge of prominent speakers including Eran Tromer, co-founder of ZCash \u2013 Tom Trowbridge, president of HashGraph \u2013 Santiago Siri, founder of Democracy Earth \u2013 and Tarun Gutra, founder of Gauntlet.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66974\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66974\" style=\"width: 185px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-66974\" src=\"http:\/\/35.153.200.241\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/sec-1.png\" alt=\"Tom Trowbridge, president of Hashgraph Hedera\" width=\"185\" height=\"271\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66974\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tom Trowbridge, president of Hashgraph Hedera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even Citi Bank and JP Morgan Chase are sending presenters from their respective blockchain units.<br \/>\nWhile the keynote addresses always set the tone for a blockchain conference, it\u2019s what happens between and after the sessions that can have the most value. The connections, new partnerships, and shared knowledge represent the market\u2019s collective maturation and its hope for future advancement.<br \/>\nIn this way, the setting and the purpose of LedgerFest is uniquely apt. Blockchain technology is at a crossroads. The technology successfully used the cryptocurrency movement to parlay the blockchain into the mainstream, and now it\u2019s up to the next generation of developers and entrepreneurs to make it flourish.<br \/>\nCommenting on the conference, Santiago Siri, founder of Democracy Earth, is excited about the role of the college-age generation will play in the proliferation of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
