{"id":632878,"date":"2026-09-15T06:30:32","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T10:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=632878"},"modified":"2026-09-15T06:25:37","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T10:25:37","slug":"coinex-to-cease-operations-by-december-too-difficult-to-contain-compliance-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/coinex-to-cease-operations-by-december-too-difficult-to-contain-compliance-risks\/","title":{"rendered":"CoinEx to cease operations by December: &#8216;Too difficult to contain compliance risks&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CoinEX, a Hong Kong-based crypto exchange, will wind down by the end of the year after operating for nine years since 2017.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the founder, Haipo Yang, all operations will cease by December 22, 2026, and he assured users that all funds are fully backed and will be available for withdrawal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yang acknowledged that competition, security, and compliance risks overwhelmed the exchange and were the main reason behind the wind-down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have come to accept a hard truth. CoinEx did not become one of the industry\u2019s leading exchanges, and the security and compliance risks of running a crypto exchange have become increasingly difficult to contain.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exchange\u2019s revenue declined while the risks and responsibility increased; thus, running the platform was \u201cno longer a rational choice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_632882\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-632882\" style=\"width: 579px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-15-114540.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-632882\" src=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-15-114540.png\" alt=\"CoinEx\" width=\"579\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-15-114540.png 579w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-15-114540-273x300.png 273w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-632882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: X<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, no new registrations will be allowed from the 15th of September. By the end of this month, all margin and spot trading will cease. Additionally, the exchange will buy back its native CET token at $0.005. The final withdrawal period will end by December.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the CoinEx Wallet and CoinEx Vault will operate independently and aren\u2019t affected by the wind-down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CoinEx ranked 64th in trust score, according to CoinGecko. It&#8217;s one of the tier-2 crypto exchanges that have been forced to shut down during this crypto winter. BitMEX, BitMart, and a few others have also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/why-the-bitmex-and-bitmart-closures-wont-mirror-the-ftx-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stopped operations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But the exchange\u2019s woes go beyond just a typical market downturn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>CoinEx: $70M hack and Iranian crypto flows<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, the exchange suffered a $70M hack, but it managed to fully repay users a few days later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the new cycle presented new challenges. Stiff competition from viral upstarts like Hyperliquid, while incumbents such as Binance were defending their turf. It meant second-tier exchanges were in for a tough ride.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While rivals tried to keep up with regulatory scrutiny, CoinEx hit another snag amid alleged funneling of Iranian crypto flows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Binance faced similar scrutiny and blacklisted addresses linked to the Iranian regime, CoinEx reportedly became a major external partner for Nobitex, a local exchange. About $4B in Iranian crypto flows were facilitated by CoinEx, according to a TRM Labs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/4b-iran-crypto-trail-puts-coinex-under-the-spotlight-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in June 2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the platform denied knowledge of the relationship, it actively began blocking Iranian IP addresses.
