The dispute followed AMC CEO Adam Aron\u2019s criticism of Robinhood\u2019s tokenised AMC exposure.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What upset AMC&#8217;s CEO?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This comes after AMC CEO Adam Aron slammed Robinhood for creating tokenised AMC exposure without AMC&#8217;s approval. From AMC&#8217;s perspective, this can look like Robinhood is effectively creating a new way for people to invest in AMC without AMC having a direct relationship with those investors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expressing frustration on the matter, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CEOAdam\/status\/2095622531524784212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aron took to X<\/a> last week and said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I find this practice to be contemptible, outrageous, disgusting, detestable, inexcusable, vile. How can it possibly be legal? We have no connection to this at all, and do not condone it in any way.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robinhood CEO&#8217;s stance on tokenisation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/09\/robinhood-ceo-says-companies-cant-control-how-their-stock-is-tokenized-as-amc-clash-escalates.html?taid=6aa170912660660001b8268f&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_content=main&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tenev has defended his stance<\/a> in a recent conversation with CNBC\u2019s Squawk Box when he said,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issuers should have control and do have control over the rights and obligations of the stock that they issue, but that doesn\u2019t mean they control everything about it. In particular, they don\u2019t control other companies issuing their own securities that reference those shares.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vladtenev\/status\/2098508615183438157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his argument<\/a> is simply based on the fact that once a company\u2019s shares are publicly traded, investors who own those shares have certain property rights. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tenev argued that blockchain distribution should not give the original company additional veto powers. Wherein, the issuer approval should be necessary if the token actually changes the rights associated with the underlying stock. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if the token is simply a separate financial instrument backed by existing shares and doesn&#8217;t modify those underlying rights, Tenev says the issuer&#8217;s permission shouldn&#8217;t automatically be necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issuer consent depends on what exactly you\u2019re doing and in the case of Robinhood stock tokens \u2013 which are tokenised securities that are issued by a separate entity that are backed by underlying shares \u2013 those should not automatically require issuer consent.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditional vs. digital recordkeeping<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tenev also argues that tokenisation could make U.S. stocks accessible to people around the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make things more clear, he even referred to the 1960s paperwork crisis wherein the U.S. securities industry struggled because enormous amounts of stock certificates had to be physically processed.
