The new proposal aims to remove staking rewards if staked ETH surpasses half of its overall circulating supply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to researcher Justin Drake and the team, the proposal (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EIP-8361<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) would help solo stakers and make ETH a store of value by making it deflationary. However, Stani Kulechov, CEO of Aave, a top lending protocol, rejected the inflation plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>DeFi leaders oppose ETH&#8217;s staking rewards cap<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Kulechov, <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/ethereums-eip-8361-aims-to-curb-eth-inflation-by-reducing-staking-rewards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the proposal<\/a> would derail institutional adoption and affect the solo stakers with \u201cunpredictable yield.\u201d Additionally, it would hurt DeFi borrowing strategies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could be good for DeFi but not for ETH in DeFi. This just makes ETH less viable as an asset and restricts its potential. I hope this proposal doesn&#8217;t move forward; otherwise, we see lot of people moving their interest in other networks<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_622432\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-622432\" style=\"width: 589px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-05-103424.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-622432\" src=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-05-103424.png\" alt=\"Ethereum inflation proposal \" width=\"589\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-05-103424.png 589w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-05-103424-300x294.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-622432\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: X<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Mike Sligadze, CEO of EtherFi, echoed the same concerns and wondered how the negligible inflation cut will boost ETH value at the expense of the DeFi ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven of the top 10 DeFi protocols will face a capital exodus. Why? Is the idea that a 0.8% reduction in issuance is somehow going to help ETH price? People who stake ETH don&#8217;t sell it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Fidelity\u2019s Director of Research, Lorenzo Valente, Aave, Morpho, Pendle, Ethena and more that depend on ETH credit markets would be affected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides, Sligadze disputed the claims about liquid staking tokens (LST) eating ETH value. According to him, LSTs act as intermediates to about a quarter of staked ETH and can\u2019t displace the altcoin as money. He concluded,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is bad for decentralization, this is bad for Ethereum adoption, and this is bad for the credibility of the network to roll things out this way.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>The problem with ETH inflation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some moderate conservatives such as Ryan Berckmans, the issuance reduction is crucial and much needed, but cutting it down to zero does not make sense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_622434\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-622434\" style=\"width: 578px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-05-104359.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-622434\" src=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-05-104359.png\" alt=\"Ethereum ETH\" width=\"578\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-05-104359.png 578w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screenshot-2026-08-05-104359-300x151.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-622434\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: X<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May, Grayscale <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/positive-for-eth-price-grayscale-backs-ethereum-staking-reward-cap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> capping staking rewards to boost ETH value in May. But it did not propose any preferred mechanism to go about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, ETH issuance stands at 0.8% per year, and stakers earn 2.62% for their staked ETH. Amid a muted market, staking demand has hit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/ethereum-staking-surges-by-1-4m-eth-what-happens-to-liquidity-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 41.4 million ETH, or 34.4% of total supply (120M).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But since the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/ethereum-fees-plunge-since-dencun-but-the-reason-is-not-what-you-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decun upgrade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in early 2024, ETH&#8217;s burn rate has slowed, and the issuance rate has climbed higher (black line, net supply change), making ETH less attractive as a store of value (SoV).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_622437\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-622437\" style=\"width: 1282px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Grayscale-Ethereum-ETH-staking-cap.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-622437\" src=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Grayscale-Ethereum-ETH-staking-cap.png\" alt=\"Ethereum ETH\" width=\"1282\" height=\"850\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Grayscale-Ethereum-ETH-staking-cap.png 1282w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Grayscale-Ethereum-ETH-staking-cap-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Grayscale-Ethereum-ETH-staking-cap-1024x679.png 1024w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Grayscale-Ethereum-ETH-staking-cap-768x509.png 768w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Grayscale-Ethereum-ETH-staking-cap-1200x796.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1282px) 100vw, 1282px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-622437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Grayscale<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, with major players like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/bitmine-owns-4-8-of-ethereum-can-staking-unlock-291m-yearly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitmine putting over $10 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the line for ETH staking, at least building consensus on key inflation is important before making them public.
