Warren over crypto bank charter approvals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Digital Chamber (TDC) has pushed back against Senator Elizabeth Warren\u2019s claims that national trust bank charter approvals for crypto firms violate the law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a letter to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the crypto lobby group said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;These approvals represent a legally sound and long-overdue step toward integrating digital asset activities into the federal prudential framework, which is focused on safety and soundness.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 10 crypto firms, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/ripple-wins-u-s-trust-bank-charter-as-garlinghouse-hits-back-at-banking-lobby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ripple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Circle, Coinbase, Anchorage Digital, Stripe, and others, got OCC approvals for the national trust charter in the past few months. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This would effectively allow them to custody crypto assets and conduct nation-wide operations without the need for individual state-by-state licenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are part of the preparations ahead of the implementation of the U.S stablecoin law, the GENIUS Act, which calls for strict capital, liquidity, and supervision requirements of stablecoin issuers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>TDC to Warren &#8211; Crypto firms didn&#8217;t evade regulations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Sen. Warren slammed the OCC for granting the approvals to the crypto firms, claiming that it could pose \u201cclear risks to consumers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allowing national trust companies to act like full-service national banks, while evading the suite of restrictions, safeguards, and obligations that apply to full-service national banks, would pose clear risks to consumers.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For her, the firms are now \u201ccrypto banks\u201d that want to \u201cevade fundamental safeguards and obligations that come with being a bank.\u201d As a result, Warren pressed the OCC to submit its review and approval process for these firms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the TDC disagreed with Warren\u2019s scrutiny, adding that the crypto firms followed due diligence and legal procedures. Cody Carbone, CEO of The Digital Chamber (TDC), said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a US Senator mischaracterizes their work and questions the legality of a rigorous federal process they voluntarily submitted to, we have an obligation to set the record straight. These companies didn&#8217;t evade regulation; they sought it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, banks had threatened to sue the OCC over these approvals, citing an &#8220;uneven playing field&#8221; since the crypto firms do not adhere to strict rules like them. However, President Donald Trump is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/trump-orders-review-of-fed-master-account-rules-for-crypto-firms-details\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pushing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more crypto firms\u2019 access to the Federal Reserve payment rails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the banking lobby is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bankingjournal.aba.com\/2026\/05\/aba-associations-urge-regulators-to-fully-account-for-stablecoin-risks-in-annual-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for annual reports on the GENIUS Act, which includes stablecoin risks to help formulate policy amendments to address them.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Final Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Digital Chamber (TDC) has backed OCC and defended the national trust charter approvals for crypto firms as \u201clegally sound.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sen.
