{"id":598986,"date":"2026-05-15T14:41:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T18:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=598986"},"modified":"2026-05-15T14:41:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T18:41:09","slug":"thorchain-exploit-raises-fresh-concerns-over-mpc-wallet-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/thorchain-exploit-raises-fresh-concerns-over-mpc-wallet-security\/","title":{"rendered":"THORChain exploit raises fresh concerns over MPC wallet security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THORChain halted trading and signing activity after one of its Asgard vaults was compromised in an exploit that drained roughly <\/span><b>$10.7 million to $10.8 million.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0This is according to statements from the protocol and security researchers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an announcement posted on <\/span><b>15 May<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, THORChain said the network automatically detected abnormal activity and suspended signing operations to prevent additional outbound transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The protocol said:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of six Asgard vaults appears to have been compromised,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">churn activity has been paused,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and node operators have been asked to review infrastructure, key management systems, and operational security for signs of compromise.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THORChain added that initial indications suggest user funds were not directly affected and that the losses appear limited to protocol-owned funds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Ledger CTO points to possible TSS vulnerability<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles Guillemet suggested the incident could involve a weakness tied to threshold signature scheme [TSS] infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Referencing comments from THORChain contributor JP Thor, Guillemet said the exploit &#8220;could be a MPC exploit&#8221; involving GG20.
