The attacker spent that period accumulating THE, the native token of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Thena<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"591\" data-end=\"890\">In total, roughly 14.5 million THE\u2014about 84% of the token\u2019s circulating supply\u2014was purchased from the open market.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"892\" data-end=\"1158\">The attacker then transferred the tokens into the lending system of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Venus Protocol<\/span><\/span>, bypassing the typical deposit flow. This maneuver allowed the attacker to build an artificial position that far exceeded the token\u2019s actual circulating supply.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1160\" data-end=\"1288\">Records show that the exploit cycle eventually involved about 53.2 million THE, roughly 367% higher than the asset\u2019s real supply.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1290\" data-end=\"1623\">The strategy relied on the token\u2019s thin on-chain liquidity. The attacker repeatedly deposited THE as collateral, borrowed other assets against it, and used those borrowed funds to purchase more THE.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1290\" data-end=\"1623\">Each cycle pushed the token\u2019s oracle price higher, creating the appearance of rising demand and inflating the value of the collateral.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1625\" data-end=\"1735\">With each loop, the attacker increased the borrow size and eventually pushed the system beyond its limits.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"2031\">The exploit ultimately drained around $3.6 million in assets. The stolen funds included 6.67 million <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">PancakeSwap<\/span><\/span>, 2,801 <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">BNB<\/span><\/span>, 1.97K WBNB, 1.58 million <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">USD Coin<\/span><\/span>, and 20 <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Bitcoin BEP2<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2033\" data-end=\"2054\">Protocol response<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2235\">In response, the team behind <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Venus Protocol<\/span><\/span> suspended the THE market and introduced tighter collateral requirements for several assets considered high risk.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2237\" data-end=\"2520\">The revised framework raises collateral thresholds and limits exposure to tokens with weak liquidity or concentrated ownership.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2237\" data-end=\"2520\">Under the new conditions, tokens used as collateral must meet stricter standards related to market capitalization, trading volume, and supply distribution.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2522\" data-end=\"2829\">Six assets were flagged under the updated criteria, including <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/predictions\/bitcoin-cash-price-prediction\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Bitcoin Cash [BCH]<\/span><\/span><\/a>, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/predictions\/litecoin-price-prediction\">Litecoin [LTC]<\/a>, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/predictions\/uniswap-price-prediction\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Uniswap [UNI]<\/span><\/span><\/a>, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/predictions\/aave-price-prediction\">Aave [AAVE]<\/a>, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/predictions\/filecoin-price-prediction\">Filecoin [FIL<\/a>]<\/span><\/span>, and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/predictions\/trust-wallet-token-price-prediction\">Trust Wallet Token [TWT]<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2831\" data-end=\"2866\">Not the first security incident<\/h2>\n<p>However, this was not the first security incident involving the protocol.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2025, Venus Protocol reported losses of roughly $27 million after a phishing attack compromised access to its core pool controller.<\/p>\n<p>The attacker deployed a malicious contract address that manipulated the system.
