{"id":561610,"date":"2026-01-15T05:30:53","date_gmt":"2026-01-15T00:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=561610"},"modified":"2026-01-14T17:20:32","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T11:50:32","slug":"polygon-makes-a-250-mln-stablecoin-bet-but-pol-still-struggles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/polygon-makes-a-250-mln-stablecoin-bet-but-pol-still-struggles\/","title":{"rendered":"Polygon makes a $250 mln stablecoin bet &#8211; But POL still struggles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amid growing institutional and mainstream crypto adoption, projects have turned to aggressive expansion, especially in stablecoin-linked areas.<\/p>\n<p>Polygon Labs has become highly ambitious, seeking to dominate the stablecoin market and cross-border settlement.<\/p>\n<h2>Polygon Labs&#8217; $250 million acquisition<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the 13th of January, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/0xPolygon\/status\/2011076681302446556?s=20\">Polygon Labs<\/a> announced that it had signed an agreement to acquire Coinme and Sequence for over $250 million in a major deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These acquisitions aim to expand Polygon\u2019s influence in stablecoin and other on-chain money transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the passing of the Genesis Act by the U.S. Congress last year, demand for stablecoins as a means of payment has surged considerably.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For that reason, Polygon Labs wants to position itself as the major player in the emerging field as institutions embrace crypto payments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Even so, Polygon\u2019s move is not an isolated case, as crypto firms have attempted to transition into banks that operate on-chain.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the infrastructure to achieve this goal remains limited, and Polygon\u2019s acquisition takes a major step towards expanded market reach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What the purchases add to Polygon<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, the purchase of crypto payment firm Coinme and wallet infrastructure Sequence anchors Polygon&#8217;s upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/polygon-jumps-18-how-pol-erased-all-of-decembers-losses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Money Stack<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these infrastructures in place, the firm will be well-positioned to streamline cross-border transactions and strengthen its stablecoin payments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, Coinme adds money transmitter licenses in 48 states and 50,000 locations for fiat-to-crypto. On the other hand, Sequence provides enterprise wallets and cross-chain transaction tech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building on 2025\u2019s 452 million stablecoin transactions, the move eyes mainstream payments, blending crypto speed with regulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Polygon ecosystem booming<\/h2>\n<p>Building on its intensified expansion, Polygon has skyrocketed to record-breaking levels. Over the same period, the number of active users has hovered between 400k and 700k, further indicating strong network demand.<\/p>\n<p>Addresses and transactions holding at elevated levels signals organic demand for the network, which tends to boost its token\u2019s price action.<\/p>\n<h2>Bearish pressure overwhelms POL, though<\/h2>\n<p>While Polygon continued to expand its market reach and network usage remained elevated, POL has faced significant bearish pressure.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, after climbing to $0.18, <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/predictions\/polygon-ecosystem-token-price-prediction\/\">POL<\/a>\u00a0faced rejection and retraced to a low of $0.15, then rebounded slightly to $0.16 at press time.<\/p>\n<p>This market weakness was largely driven by increased profit-taking between the 10th and the 14th of January.
