{"id":501441,"date":"2025-06-14T14:00:44","date_gmt":"2025-06-14T08:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=501441"},"modified":"2025-06-14T13:43:21","modified_gmt":"2025-06-14T08:13:21","slug":"polkadots-threshold-bitcoin-plan-under-fire-long-term-thinking-or-garbage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/polkadots-threshold-bitcoin-plan-under-fire-long-term-thinking-or-garbage\/","title":{"rendered":"Polkadot&#8217;s Threshold Bitcoin plan under fire: &#8216;Long-term thinking&#8217; or &#8216;garbage&#8217;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><em>Polkadot proposes converting 500,000 DOT into Bitcoin via tBTC for treasury diversification.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Community debates plan amid DOT price slump and delayed SEC decision on Polkadot ETF.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/polkadot-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polkadot [DOT]<\/a> is considering a bold shift in its treasury strategy by <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.polkadot.network\/t\/bitcoin-reserve-for-the-polkadot-treasury\/13221\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposing<\/a> a conversion of 500,000 DOT tokens into Threshold Bitcoin (tBTC), a Bitcoin-backed ERC-20 token. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative, which seeks to diversify the network\u2019s holdings through Hydration\u2019s \u201crolling DCA\u201d method over the next year, has sparked a wave of discussion within the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While some support the move as a hedge against market volatility and a step toward long-term stability, others question the timing, particularly with <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/bitcoin-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin [BTC]<\/a> trading near its all-time highs. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Polkadot&#8217;s Bitcoin Reserve plan<\/h2>\n<p>In early June, a member of the Polkadot community, known as \u201chippiestank,\u201d introduced a proposal to establish a Bitcoin Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The conversion, set to take place over the course of a year, would be achieved by gradually converting 500,000 DOT tokens into BTC.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plan involves employing a dollar-cost averaging (DCA) approach and leveraging Threshold BTC (tBTC) to gain exposure to BTC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, DOT has experienced a disappointing performance in 2025, with the token dropping nearly 60% year-to-date.<\/p>\n<p>Inasmuch, many members of the community have expressed support for the proposal. They view it as a potential solution to stabilize the network&#8217;s financial situation.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, one community member <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.polkadot.network\/t\/bitcoin-reserve-for-the-polkadot-treasury\/13221\/6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI believe the \u2018DOT ATL, BTC ATH\u2019 argument misframes the situation. This proposal is about risk management and operational continuity, not market timing or speculation\u201d.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defending the proposal, the initiator argued that waiting for the \u201cperfect\u201d moment to buy Bitcoin could lead to missed opportunities and stall Polkadot\u2019s diversification strategy entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Mixed community reaction<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the plan hasn\u2019t convinced everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some community members <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.polkadot.network\/t\/bitcoin-reserve-for-the-polkadot-treasury\/13221\/7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remain<\/a> unconvinced of its long-term benefits, expressing doubts about its actual value to the ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If we want a resilient Treasury then we would diversify into different asset classes.
