{"id":482733,"date":"2025-04-15T03:30:01","date_gmt":"2025-04-14T22:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=482733"},"modified":"2025-04-14T16:50:03","modified_gmt":"2025-04-14T11:20:03","slug":"bhutan-bets-on-bitcoin-doubling-salaries-to-combat-brain-drain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/bhutan-bets-on-bitcoin-doubling-salaries-to-combat-brain-drain\/","title":{"rendered":"Bhutan bets on Bitcoin: Doubling salaries to combat brain drain"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhutan sold $100M BTC to double public workers\u2019 salaries and reduce brain drain.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nation\u2019s BTC holding eased from 13K to 8K in the past year.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an Al Jazeera report, the Bhutan Kingdom\u2019s bet on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/bitcoin-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin [BTC]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been crucial in solving the island\u2019s economic problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, the world\u2019s largest cryptocurrency has helped double civil servant salaries and reduce brain drain (mass exodus of skilled Bhutan workers).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bitcoin use cases<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2025\/4\/14\/bitcoin-king-why-is-bhutan-betting-on-crypto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stated that 10% of Bhutan&#8217;s 800,000 population left the island in 2022 for better wages in developed countries, and the trend extended into 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But BTC solved this crisis. In a separate interview in March, Bhutan\u2019s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JAN3com\/status\/1897746512504840327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018We\u2019ve used Bitcoin to provide free healthcare and for the environment. But these are minor; the main use of BTC has been to finance the salaries of public workers.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report added that the island sold $100M of BTC in 2023 to increase salaries. Bhutan has massive hydroelectric power, and the excess electricity is either sold to India or dedicated to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/bhutans-crypto-hydro-mining-endeavor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BTC mining<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. El Salvador uses a similar strategy and mines BTC using its vast volcanic power resources (geothermal). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, most of its current stash has been directly acquired from the markets. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It remains to be seen how it will leverage its holdings to solve the country&#8217;s problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countries, including the U.S., El Salvador, Bhutan, and others, collectively control 529K BTC per Bitcoin Treasury&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/treasuries.bitbo.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
