As expected, this triggered a withdrawal frenzy as investors exited the crypto exchange en masse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, according to Bybit\u2019s founder and CEO <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/benbybit\/status\/1893102137711960486\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben Zhou<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the exchange saw record withdrawal requests, but they were all handled smoothly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince the hack, Bybit has experienced the most number of withdraws that we have ever seen, We have had a total number of more than 350k withdrawal requests.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how was the exchange compromised, and can it retrieve the &gt;$1 billion lost funds?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>All the details<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the exchange, the compromise was a sophisticated attack that tricked signers into unknowingly giving control of its multi-signature (multi-sig) cold wallet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_469442\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-469442\" style=\"width: 589px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-statement-.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-469442 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-statement-.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"633\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-statement-.png 589w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-statement--279x300.png 279w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-469442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Bybit_Official\/status\/1892965292931702929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 400k ETH was siphoned from the compromised cold wallet to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/address\/0x47666fab8bd0ac7003bce3f5c3585383f09486e2#tokentxns\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attacker&#8217;s address<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and split into 10k ETH chunks to several other addresses. According to CryptoQuant analyst <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoquant.com\/insights\/quicktake\/67b8e6afca9deb1710f448b4-What-happenned-on-Bybit-due-to-the-recent-Hack\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Frost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, investors also withdrew 713 BTC from the exchange as fear intensified.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe shadow of FTX loomed over the market, triggering a wave of fear and prompting investors to accelerate withdrawals from Bybit. This was evident in BTC, with 713 BTC withdrawn at the same time.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Will Bybit recover the funds?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to reports, Bybit received ETH loans from Bitget and Binance to support the withdrawal pressures amid its low ETH reserves. For example &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SpotOnChain reported that Bybit received +$170M ETH loans. It <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/spotonchain\/status\/1893134210506076264\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBybit has received $172.5M in loans from various exchanges\/institutions to manage customer withdrawals in the past 7 hours, including 40,000 $ETH ($107M) from Bitget 12,652 $stETH ($33.9M) from a #MEXC\u2019s hot wallet and 11,800 $ETH ($31.6M) from Binance\u2019s hot wallet.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_469445\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-469445\" style=\"width: 1282px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-ETH-loans-from-Binance-Bitget.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-469445 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-ETH-loans-from-Binance-Bitget.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1282\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-ETH-loans-from-Binance-Bitget.jpeg 1282w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-ETH-loans-from-Binance-Bitget-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-ETH-loans-from-Binance-Bitget-1024x767.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-ETH-loans-from-Binance-Bitget-768x575.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Bybit-ETH-loans-from-Binance-Bitget-1200x899.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1282px) 100vw, 1282px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-469445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Etherscan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worth noting, however, that this still leaves it short of the $1.2 billion in stolen funds. Bybit\u2019s CEO, however, has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/benbybit\/status\/1892969284587966869\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maintained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the exchange is solvent and can cover all user losses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBybit is solvent even if this hack loss is not recovered, all of clients assets are 1 to 1 backed, we can cover the loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even so, the main question is &#8211; Can Bybit recover the stolen funds?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/zachxbt\/status\/1893055033069224406\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ZachXBT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPartial recovery is more common (15-30% in a good scenario?) but it\u2019ll also be a bit harder to launder $1.46B I think depending on how patient they are.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some top figures like Samson Mow and Arthur Hayes have urged Ethereum\u2019s founder Vitalik Buterin to roll back the chain to recover funds. Mow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Excellion\/status\/1893132013768491239\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI fully support rolling back Ethereum\u2019s chain (again) so the stolen ETH is returned to Bybit_Official and also to prevent the North Korean government from using those funds to finance their nuclear weapons program. It must be done Vitalik Buterin.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At press time though, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buterin was yet to make a statement.
