{"id":456039,"date":"2024-12-31T14:30:45","date_gmt":"2024-12-31T09:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=456039"},"modified":"2024-12-31T14:08:15","modified_gmt":"2024-12-31T08:38:15","slug":"crypto-alert-tethers-usdt-delisting-what-every-investor-must-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/crypto-alert-tethers-usdt-delisting-what-every-investor-must-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto alert: Tether\u2019s USDT delisting &#8211; What every investor must know"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coinbase delisted USDT as MiCA guidelines became effective.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USDT market cap has dropped by $4B as insiders called the delisting a \u2018Tether FUD.\u2019<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In mid-December, crypto exchange Coinbase delisted Tether\u2019s USDT from its platform, citing \u2018non-compliance\u2019 with EU\u2019s crypto regulation MiCA (Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation), one of the most robust crypto standards that became effective on the 30th of December.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As one of the largest USD-pegged <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/stablecoins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stablecoins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by market cap, Tether\u2019s USDT has enjoyed dominance until recently, when the market began re-adjusting to MiCA\u2019s guidelines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a recent Kaiko <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.kaiko.com\/insights\/mica-is-reshaping-eur-stablecoin-markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Circle\u2019s USDC, the largest MiCA-compliant stablecoin, could gain more market share after USDT&#8217;s delisting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Regulator&#8217;s silence on USDT status<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite Coinbase\u2019s move, the regulator and adviser for MiCA compliance, ESMA (EU Securities and Markets Authority), has not officially communicated USDT&#8217;s compliance status as of this writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Binance and other exchanges have reportedly restricted some USDT services for EU users. Part of the exchange&#8217;s recent statement <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BinanceHelpDesk\/status\/1873260426378789003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">read<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBinance announced its approach to non-MiCA stablecoins in June 2024, and there will be no changes until further notice. USDT remains supported for custody; deposits and withdrawals are not affected. We encourage users to use USDC and EURI as these are MiCA-compliant stablecoins.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, does the ESMA\u2019s silence mean USDT could be non-compliant?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Juan Ignacio Ibanez, a technical member of the EU crypto compliance advocacy group MiCA Crypto Alliance, the silence from regulators didn\u2019t suggest USDT is compliant. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Ibanez said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo regulators have explicitly stated that USDT isn\u2019t compliant, but this does not mean that it is.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some industry insiders pointed out that only Coinbase has delisted USDT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Samson Mow, CEO of BTC nation-state advisory firm Jan3, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Excellion\/status\/1873326174530920595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the delisting a \u2018Tether FUD.\u2019 He said,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOther than Coinbase (who is invested in Circle) no other exchange has plans to delist USDt in the short term for European users.
