{"id":438469,"date":"2024-10-31T16:30:20","date_gmt":"2024-10-31T11:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=438469"},"modified":"2024-10-31T18:49:36","modified_gmt":"2024-10-31T13:19:36","slug":"microstrategys-42b-btc-plan-a-big-win-for-mstr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/microstrategys-42b-btc-plan-a-big-win-for-mstr\/","title":{"rendered":"MicroStrategy&#8217;s $42B BTC plan &#8211; A big win for MSTR?"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MicroStrategy plans to buy $42B BTC in the next 3 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An analyst projected that MSTR will become more like a US spot BTC ETF.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Saylor\u2019s firm, MicroStrategy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/breaking-42-billion-microstrategy-plans-to-go-big-in-coming-three-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plans to acquire $42 billion of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/bitcoin-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin [BTC]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the next three years, just before the 2028 halving cycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday, we are announcing a strategic goal of raising $42 billion of capital over the next 3 years, comprised of $21 billion of equity and $21 billion of fixed income securities, which we refer to as our \u201c21\/21 Plan.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has reinforced Saylor\u2019s uber-bullish stance on BTC, as he expects the asset to reach $3 million-$49 million in the next 20 years. He has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/saylor\/status\/1851637960996766076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Trump\u2019s pro-crypto stance, with the latest push for removing the capital gains tax on BTC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Is MSTR changing to BTC ETF?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of October 2024, MicroStrategy held 252, 220 BTC, acquired for $9.9 billion. The firm\u2019s BTC stash was now worth over\u00a0 $18.15 billion at current prices, translating to $8 billion in unrealized gains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_438470\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-438470\" style=\"width: 1370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-31-083329.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-438470 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-31-083329.png\" alt=\"MicroStrategy\" width=\"1370\" height=\"724\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-31-083329.png 1370w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-31-083329-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-31-083329-1024x541.png 1024w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-31-083329-768x406.png 768w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-31-083329-1200x634.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1370px) 100vw, 1370px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-438470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: MicroStrategy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, part of the firm\u2019s $42 BTC acquisition plan will be done through a $21 billion ATM (at-the-market) stock issuance program, which some analysts believe would turn its stock\u2019s MSTR into a BTC ETF.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the analysts, Quinn Thompson, founder of macro-focused crypto hedge fund Lekker Capital, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/qthomp\/status\/1851722550415442283\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy ripping the bandaid off and announcing a massive ATM shelf like this, they are turning $MSTR into a de-facto ETF.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This would allow the firm to issue stocks in the secondary market at any time to fund its BTC acquisition, almost similar to how US spot BTC ETFs operate. According to Thomspon, this could boost MSTR even more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The equity program, alongside the intention to issue convertible notes (debt) to buy BTC, sums up the firm\u2019s long-term vision of becoming a \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/amid-plans-to-start-a-bitcoin-bank-mstr-stock-soars-to-ath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin bank,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 as revealed in mid-October.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, MSTR holders seemed to be the real beneficiaries of the latest update. MSTR has been the best-performing S&amp;P stock since adopting the BTC strategy in 2020. This has seen MSTR outperform and could even downplay the firm\u2019s latest Q3 loss of $19.4 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On year-to-date (YTD) basis, MSTR was up +250%, more than 4x BTC\u2019s 60% gains.
