{"id":436307,"date":"2024-10-24T17:30:05","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T12:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=436307"},"modified":"2024-10-24T13:55:11","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T08:25:11","slug":"michael-saylor-clarifies-stance-on-bitcoin-custody-amid-community-backlash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/michael-saylor-clarifies-stance-on-bitcoin-custody-amid-community-backlash\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Saylor clarifies stance on Bitcoin custody amid community backlash"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><em>Michael Saylor reverses his stance after facing backlash for advocating big banks to oversee Bitcoin custody.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Concerns rise over Bitcoin&#8217;s centralization risk due to increasing institutional involvement.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After facing widespread backlash from the crypto community, MicroStrategy founder Michael Saylor walked back his comments which suggested that large banks should oversee <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/bitcoin-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin [BTC]<\/a> custody. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This stemmed from the ongoing concerns that such a move could lead to centralization and increase the risk of government intervention.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Michael Saylor steps back from his earlier stance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing these concerns, Saylor clarified his position, asserting that individuals and institutions should have the autonomy to decide how they store and manage their BTC holdings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a 23rd October post on X, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/saylor\/status\/1849132234692833436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saylor stated<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI support self-custody for those willing &amp; able, the right to self-custody for all, and freedom to choose the form of custody &amp; custodian for individuals &amp; institutions globally. #Bitcoin benefits from all forms of investment by all types of entities, and should welcome everyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saylor, once celebrated for his personal Bitcoin strategy and the massive investments made by his company MicroStrategy ,now finds his reputation under strain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those unaware, Saylor recently advocated for BTC holders to trust large, \u201ctoo big to fail\u201d financial institutions, asserting that these entities are well-equipped to securely manage significant assets like Bitcoin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This remark openly challenged Saylor&#8217;s position, with Ethereum co-founder <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/river-financial-introduces-3-8-btc-interest-for-cash-deposits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vitalik Buterin<\/a> questioning the wisdom of relying on centralized institutions in a space built on decentralization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buterin said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll happily say that I think Saylor\u2019s comments are batshit insane.
