However, ETH has underperformed BTC over the last two years, despite both assets seeing significant price fluctuations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While both BTC and ETH saw the approval of Spot Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) recently, this development has not been enough to reverse the altcoin&#8217;s relative underperformance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Ethereum slides against Bitcoin<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to data from <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/cryptoquant_com\/status\/1832053440106856685?s=46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CryptoQuant<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/assessing-the-market-reaction-after-ethereum-foundations-latest-1000-eth-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethereum<\/a> has underperformed <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/one-reason-why-bitcoins-march-2024-ath-wont-stand-for-too-long\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bitcoin<\/a> by 44% over the past two years. The analysis indicated that ETH&#8217;s decline relative to BTC began after The Merge, which transitioned Ethereum from a Proof of Work (PoW) to a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, Ethereum has struggled to keep pace with Bitcoin.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_421382\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-421382\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ETH_BTC-Price-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-421382 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ETH_BTC-Price-1.png\" alt=\"Ethereum\/Bitcoin price move\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ETH_BTC-Price-1.png 2560w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ETH_BTC-Price-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ETH_BTC-Price-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ETH_BTC-Price-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ETH_BTC-Price-1-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ETH_BTC-Price-1-2048x1152.png 2048w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/ETH_BTC-Price-1-1200x675.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-421382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: CryptoQuant<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ETH\/BTC price, at press time, stood at 0.0425, marking its lowest level since April 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Despite the positive news of Spot ETF approvals for both assets in 2024 \u2014 Ethereum&#8217;s ETF being approved in July \u2014 The approval has done little to reverse ETH&#8217;s lack of performance against BTC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Some reasons for the Ethereum\/Bitcoin disparity<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum and Bitcoin have noted contrasting trends in network fees and transaction activity over the past few months. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, data showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/ethereums-inflation-problem-heres-why-blobs-have-divided-the-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethereum&#8217;s<\/a> fees have declined following its Dencun upgrade, contributing to decreased network activity. This has been driven primarily by the introduction of Inscriptions (related to Bitcoin Ordinals) and Runes. These developments have increased the demand for block space, contributing to the rise in transaction costs on the Bitcoin network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fall in Ethereum fees has also affected its burn rate, tied to its EIP-1559 mechanism.
