{"id":407303,"date":"2024-07-16T21:30:03","date_gmt":"2024-07-16T16:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=407303"},"modified":"2024-07-16T15:46:09","modified_gmt":"2024-07-16T10:16:09","slug":"tether-bitfinex-accused-of-market-manipulation-whats-going-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/tether-bitfinex-accused-of-market-manipulation-whats-going-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Tether, Bitfinex accused of market manipulation &#8211; What&#8217;s going on?"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><em>Plaintiffs accuse Tether and Bitfinex of using USDT to manipulate crypto prices.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Despite fluctuations, USDT traded at $1.00 with bullish RSI at 58.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a surprising development, plaintiffs in a long-standing class-action lawsuit have accused Tether and Bitfinex of engaging in a misleading scheme to manipulate cryptocurrency prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What&#8217;s the allegation all about?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amended complaint alleges that the companies used USDT, Tether&#8217;s dollar-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/stablecoins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stablecoin<\/a>, to artificially influence market dynamics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expanding on the same, a <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.nysd.524076\/gov.uscourts.nysd.524076.114.0_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legal document<\/a> filed by plaintiffs in the Southern District of New York noted,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKeeping their identities secret, Defendants [Tether and Bitfinex] made massive, carefully timed purchases of crypto commodities to signal to the market that there was enormous demand and thus cause the price of those commodities to spike.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In simple words, plaintiffs alleged Tether and Bitfinex used billions of dollars in USDT to buy cryptocurrencies. However, contrary to Tether&#8217;s claims that each USDT was backed one-to-one by U.S. dollars, the Plaintiffs argue this was not the case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this case, the main plaintiffs are American cryptocurrency traders Matthew Script, Pinchas Goldshtein, Jason Leibowitz, and Benjamin Leibowitz.
