{"id":402575,"date":"2024-06-27T22:30:16","date_gmt":"2024-06-27T17:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=402575"},"modified":"2024-06-27T17:07:19","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T11:37:19","slug":"crypto-exchange-abra-reaches-82-1-million-settlement-with-25-u-s-states","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/crypto-exchange-abra-reaches-82-1-million-settlement-with-25-u-s-states\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto exchange Abra reaches $82.1 million settlement with 25 U.S. states"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><em>\u00a0Abra settles with U.S. state regulators for operating without licenses.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Gemini&#8217;s Earn program settles and guarantees $1.1 billion for users amid regulatory challenges.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent turn of events, Abra has reached a settlement agreement with financial regulators from 25 U.S. states over allegations of operating without proper licenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, this action not only targeted Abra but also its subsidiaries and CEO, William Barhydt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The terms of the settlement<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elaborating on the same, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csbs.org\/newsroom\/state-financial-regulators-settle-abra-return-cryptocurrency-assets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) noted,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce the remaining virtual assets are returned pursuant to the settlement terms, up to $82.1 million will be paid back to consumers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This underscored the rise in illicit activities and also the efforts made across various U.S. jurisdictions regarding consumer protection.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appreciating the efforts made by the U.S. jurisdictions, CSBS Chair and Washington State Department of Financial Institutions Director, Charlie Clark in a press release report said,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cState financial regulators take their role to protect consumers and prevent unlicensed activity seriously. Companies that do not operate within the bounds of state laws will be held accountable.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Investigation details<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For context, this investigation was carried out by state financial regulators from several states, including Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Vermont, and Washington.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the investigation process, the regulators found that Abra had been offering cryptocurrency-related services through its mobile application without obtaining the necessary licenses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, Abra agreed to stop accepting virtual asset deposits from its U.S. customers and ceased cryptocurrency buying, selling, and trading services for U.S. customers back on June 15, 2023. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, Abra was also supposed to refund any remaining virtual assets held by U.S. customers in the participating states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Remarking on this entire scenario, an Abra spokesperson said in a statement,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAbra is pleased to enter into a Term Sheet negotiated with a working group from the Money Transmitters Regulators Association regarding the Abra App that Abra previously offered in the U.S.,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Gemini caught up with the same loophole<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needless to say, this isn&#8217;t the first time such an event has unfolded. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, recently the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/gemini-to-return-1-1b-to-earn-users-after-a-deal-with-ny-regulators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gemini<\/a>, in collaboration with Genesis and other creditors, was operating outside the DFS regulatory oversight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following this, Genesis reached a settlement agreement with the DFS, wherein the Earn program users were guaranteed to receive \u201c100% of their digital assets back in kind,\u201d totaling approximately $1.1 billion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, as the US is navigating digital asset regulation amidst widespread adoption, such cases emphasize the importance of adhering to regulatory frameworks to maintain trust and stability in the financial ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s what the various instances highlighting crypto&#8217;s regulatory challenges amid adoption are trying to say&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":66,"featured_media":402586,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[66,3,4,20],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-402575","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-news","category-news","category-social","category-trading-view"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v28.0 (Yoast SEO v28.3) -
