{"id":387080,"date":"2024-04-25T16:30:14","date_gmt":"2024-04-25T11:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=387080"},"modified":"2024-04-25T14:37:13","modified_gmt":"2024-04-25T09:07:13","slug":"bitcoin-affected-as-u-s-doj-charges-samourai-wallet-founders-why","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/bitcoin-affected-as-u-s-doj-charges-samourai-wallet-founders-why\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin affected as U.S. DoJ charges Samourai Wallet founders &#8211; Why?"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. DoJ charges against BTC-focused Samourai Wallet founders elicit mixed reactions.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BTC\u2019s recovery stalled after the development, reversing early week gains.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samourai Wallet, a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/bitcoin-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bitcoin [BTC]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; focused wallet and mixer, is the latest victim of the U.S.&#8217;s heightened clampdown on crypto mixers in an attempt to curb illicit finance through crypto.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. DoJ (Department of Justice) has charged Samourai Wallet mixer founders, Keonne Rodriguez and William Lonergan Hill for operating an unlicensed money transmitter business and money laundering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/founders-and-ceo-cryptocurrency-mixing-service-arrested-and-charged-money-laundering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dated the 24th of April, part of the U.S. DoJ statement read,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese charges arise from the defendants\u2019 development, marketing, and operation of a cryptocurrency mixer that executed over $2 billion in unlawful transactions and facilitated more than $100 million in money laundering transactions from illegal dark web markets, such as Silk Road and Hydra Market.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statement cited X (formerly Twitter) posts by accounts linked to Samourai Wallet and the founders as part of the indictment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Privacy under attack? BTC recovery stalls<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the founder of on-chain analytics CryptoQuant, Ki Young Ju, viewed the arrest against Samourai wallet founders as misplaced instead of going for \u201creal\u201d criminals. He <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ki_young_ju\/status\/1783290302822064461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quipped<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe U.S. DOJ has arrested pioneers in #Bitcoin privacy technology. Privacy stands as a core value of Bitcoin. Mixing itself is not a crime. Even crypto exchanges use mixing to safeguard user privacy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s like punishing the inventor of the knife instead of the one who uses it.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crypto mixers enhance the privacy of cryptocurrency transactions and are very welcome. This is especially true as Google can now track some blockchain addresses and associated transactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/ethereum-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum [ETH]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> founder Vitalik Buterin also prefers crypto mixer Railgun and recently defended his action, stating that \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/1779898310314144171\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">privacy is normal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Stacks Co-founder Muneeb Ali <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/muneeb\/status\/1783223582438326560\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reiterated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Buterin\u2019s stance on Samourai Wallet founders\u2019 legal woes. He emphasized,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrivacy should be normal, not illegal.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, crypto mixers also make it challenging to track illicit transactions and have been one of criminals&#8217; preferred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/2024-crypto-money-laundering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">money laundering methods<\/a>. Tornado Cash was recently sanctioned because of that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yan Pritzker of Swan Bitcoin&#8217;s reaction to Samourai Wallet was mixed. He defended the founders for offering privacy tech to Bitcoin, noting that,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSamourai were trying to do the right thing to provide privacy tech for many legitimate people. Criminal use is a small fraction of mixing use. The merchant where you spend your Bitcoin shouldn\u2019t know how much Bitcoin you own.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Pritzker also castigated the founders for poking the U.S. DoJ and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/skwp\/status\/1783301043561926854\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highlighted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut they were wrong to go around promoting a service to criminals, and the design using a centralized coordinator run by a company was an obvious SPOF and was predictably attacked after they kept poking the bear.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BTC recovery has since stalled as the price dropped below $67K, hours after the development.
