A keenly awaited and celebrated event, halving tends to boost the economic value of the biggest digital asset on the planet by squeezing the supply.<\/p>\n<p>However, regardless of the perceived bullishness, these events have had an adverse impact on the economics of Bitcoin mining, forcing miners to adopt new methods to improve their profit margins.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Halvings &#8211; A pain for Bitcoin miners<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As is well known, miners validate and add transactions on the Bitcoin ledger, thus acting as a vital cog in the everyday operations of the chain. On their part, miners make huge investments in setting up mining infrastructure to carry out this task.<\/p>\n<p>In return, they are compensated with a fixed subsidy from every block they mine along with transaction fees from users.<\/p>\n<p>Halvings attack the vital component of their revenue &#8211; block rewards. Each of the four such events in Bitcoin&#8217;s short history have slashed rewards by half, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/bitcoin-completes-is-4th-halving-will-btcs-price-climb-by-500x-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest<\/a> one reducing it from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC. The progressive drop was examined by AMBCrypto using Glassnode&#8217;s data.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_386753\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-386753\" style=\"width: 1800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/miner-revenue-halving.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-386753 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/miner-revenue-halving.png\" alt=\"Miner revenue halving\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/miner-revenue-halving.png 1800w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/miner-revenue-halving-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/miner-revenue-halving-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/miner-revenue-halving-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/miner-revenue-halving-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/miner-revenue-halving-1200x675.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-386753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Glassnode<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Similarly, rewards would drop to 1.5625 coins per block after next halving, and once all the Bitcoins have been mined, estimated to be around 2140, miners will earn income only from transaction fees.<\/p>\n<p>This meant that miners would have to double their mining investments to achieve the same output after halving, in other words to break even.<\/p>\n<p>So where does the solution lie?<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The significance of transaction fees<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, transaction fees paid by users was emerging as a strong revenue stream for miners with each halving. This meant there was a strong case to look for avenues which could increase Bitcoin network utilization and generate more fees for the miners.<\/p>\n<p>In comes innovative token protocols like Ordinals and Runes.<\/p>\n<p>We recently saw Rune protocol going live with the halving block &#8211; 840,000. Developed by Casey Rodmarmor who also introduced the <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/decoding-ordinals-nft-project-on-bitcoin-can-it-compete-with-eth-nfts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ordinals<\/a> concept last year, Runes also allows users to mint tokens on the Bitcoin chain.<\/p>\n<p>The results were immediate. The halving block saw a whopping 37.62 BTCs in fees collected by miners, worth nearly $2.4 million at prevailing market prices.<\/p>\n<p>Combined with the slashed block subsidy of 3.12 BTCs, miners earned more than $2.6 million from the block, AMBCrypto spotted using Mempool data.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_386779\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-386779\" style=\"width: 918px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/bitcoin-mempool-840000.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-386779 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/bitcoin-mempool-840000.jpg\" alt=\"Bitcoin mempool halving block\" width=\"918\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/bitcoin-mempool-840000.jpg 918w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/bitcoin-mempool-840000-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/bitcoin-mempool-840000-768x257.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 918px) 100vw, 918px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-386779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Mempool<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In fact, the percentage of miner revenue derived from fees hit an all-time high (ATH) of 75% on the halving day. Up until 2023, Bitcoin\u2019s reputation was restricted to being a peer-to-peer (P2P) payments network with not much real-world utility.<\/p>\n<p>However, with Ordinals and Runes, it has started to position itself like other conventional layer-1 blockchains, enabling minting of NFTs and other fungible tokens.<\/p>\n<p>All of this works well in Bitcoin miners&#8217; favor.
