With new tokens getting launched every other day, traders have been scouring the blockchain space for any and every profit-taking opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>This FOMO, however, has caught the eye of scammers who look to catch these unsuspecting investors off guard.<\/p>\n<h4>Impersonators on the rise<\/h4>\n<p>On the 17th of March, on-chain sleuth <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/zachxbt\/status\/1769150002490638597?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ZachXBT<\/a>, known for uncovering scams and bad actors in the crypto space, brought to light a phishing scam worth nearly $3 million.<\/p>\n<p>The attacker reportedly impersonated the X (formerly Twitter) account of Ansem, a well-known crypto trader. The modus operandi was straightforward.<\/p>\n<p>They started replying to each of Ansem&#8217;s posts, announcing a fake presale event of a token named &#8216;BULL.&#8217;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_377024\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-377024\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/phishing-scam.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-377024\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/phishing-scam-1024x886.jpg\" alt=\"Phishing scam\" width=\"740\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/phishing-scam-1024x886.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/phishing-scam-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/phishing-scam-768x664.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/phishing-scam-1200x1038.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/phishing-scam.jpg 1290w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 740px) 100vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-377024\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: ZachXBT\/X<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Naive users, without performing much due diligence, fell for the enticement, ending up losing a significant chunk of their holdings. A single user lost more than $1 million.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes later after the revelation, Ansem also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/blknoiz06\/status\/1769151560876015664?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took<\/a> to X to admit how his name was misused to rob users, calling the developments \u201cinsane.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>BOME&#8217;s frenzy being exploited?<\/h4>\n<p>The phisher exploited the excitement around the so-called presale event, of the latest fan-favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/category\/memecoins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BOOK OF MEME [BOME]<\/a> token.<\/p>\n<p>In a nutshell, during the fundraising stage, participants deposited SOL coins to an address specified by the project&#8217;s creator Darkfarms, and received BOME in return.<\/p>\n<p>Worse, phishers were not only mimicking successful airdrop programs but also the people who ran them. posts.<\/p>\n<h4>The rising evil<\/h4>\n<p>Phishing was steadily rising as one of the biggest attack vectors employed by Web3 criminals.<\/p>\n<p>According to Web3 anti-scam platform\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/drops.scamsniffer.io\/post\/scam-sniffer-2023-crypto-phishing-scams-drain-300-million-from-320000-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Scam Sniffer<\/a>, nearly $300 million was lost due to crypto phishing scams in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The new year started on a worse note, with more than <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/47-mln-lost-to-crypto-phishing-scams-in-february-as-victims-increase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$100 million<\/a> already stolen by phishers in the first two months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scammers mislead users, promise a fake &#8216;BULL&#8217;
