Stein (@NYCStein) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYCStein\/status\/1747627532508176635?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 17, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Stein initially anticipated Coinbase could successfully challenge specific SEC claims, excluding those related to its staking rewards program and overall operational structure.<\/p>\n<p>The SEC asserted that Coinbase, through staking customer assets and returning rewards, is involved in offering and selling investment contracts, subject to SEC regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the SEC claimed that Coinbase operated as an unregistered broker, a charge denied by the exchange.<\/p>\n<p>A pivotal moment occurred when Coinbase offered a more precise definition of an \u201cinvestment contract\u201d than the SEC. They suggested an obligation to invest in a business rather than just an ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>However, Stein viewed Coinbase&#8217;s definition as more compelling.
