{"id":360377,"date":"2023-12-25T16:00:05","date_gmt":"2023-12-25T10:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=360377"},"modified":"2023-12-25T15:04:27","modified_gmt":"2023-12-25T09:34:27","slug":"how-has-ethereum-changed-since-merge-and-shapella","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/how-has-ethereum-changed-since-merge-and-shapella\/","title":{"rendered":"How has Ethereum changed since Merge and Shapella?"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><em>About 339,121 ETH coins have exited circulation since the Merge.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The number of active ETH validators jumped by 58% since the Shapella upgrade.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ethereum [ETH] has witnessed two major events over the last 15 months \u2014 the Merge and the Shapella upgrade \u2014 that have fundamentally altered the way the network is run.<\/p>\n<p>However, the ETH fanbase would take a lot of heart from the fact that the impact of these events has been positive, even by conservative estimates.<\/p>\n<h4>ETH becomes deflationary<\/h4>\n<p>About 339,121 ETH coins have exited circulation since the Merge, with the rate of deflation accelerating significantly in the last quarter of 2023, according to AMBCrypto&#8217;s scrutiny of ultrasound money data.<\/p>\n<p>As of this writing, ETH&#8217;s total circulating supply was 120.18 million, the lowest since the network transitioned from the proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism to proof-of-stake (PoS).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_360383\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-360383\" style=\"width: 571px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Ethereum-supply-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-360383\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Ethereum-supply-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"571\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Ethereum-supply-1.jpg 571w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Ethereum-supply-1-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 571px) 100vw, 571px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-360383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: ultrasound.money<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As analyzed from the graph above, the net supply shrunk at an annual rate of 0.220%. Had the transition not taken place, ETH\u2019s total supply would have increased by more than 4.8 million, with an annual inflation rate of 3.168%.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, a bullish market with high network usage aids deflation and vice versa. This is because a part of the fee charged for validating transactions, called the base fee, is burned and <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/developers\/docs\/gas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">removed<\/a> from circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Hence, the higher the network activity, the more the deflationary pressure on ETH.<\/p>\n<h4>Staking gets a boost<\/h4>\n<p>The Shapella upgrade launched earlier in the year, which enabled staking withdrawals, also gave a fillip to ETH staking activity.<\/p>\n<p>As per a <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1wHCHlEOpoCIcsr8mzFjGFPawkfozSe06\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by staking service provider P2P.org, the number of active ETH validators jumped by 58%, equating to $23 billion of new ETH stake.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_360388\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-360388\" style=\"width: 689px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ETH-staking.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-360388\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ETH-staking.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"689\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ETH-staking.jpg 689w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/ETH-staking-300x126.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 689px) 100vw, 689px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-360388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: P2P.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, the sharp increase has started to pose new problems for the network.<\/p>\n<h4>Is there an overdose?<\/h4>\n<p>The staking rewards curve is designed to decrease the yield paid to validators in proportion to increases in the validator count. This is to restrict excess capital inflow and maintain a liquid supply of ETH for use in transactions.<\/p>\n<p>However, emerging DeFi avenues like liquid staking and restaking have increased the potential yield which can be earned by staking ETH.
