However, when considering these statistics, is the existing rate of cryptocurrency-related crimes sufficient to prompt widespread panic? Also, is it enough to label the entire cryptocurrency sector as a criminal operation?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>A breakdown of what was lost to crypto crime<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/south-korea-brings-in-new-measures-to-tackle-crypto-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crypto crime<\/a> report released earlier this year by <a href=\"https:\/\/go.chainalysis.com\/rs\/503-FAP-074\/images\/Crypto_Crime_Report_2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chainalysis<\/a> detailed what was lost in the previous year. The report highlighted that despite the market&#8217;s downturn, the volume of illicit transactions increased for the second consecutive year, reaching a record high of $20.6 billion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, the report revealed that 43% of this illicit transaction volume was linked to activities involving sanctioned entities.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_339869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-339869\" style=\"width: 933px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/crypto-crime-sources.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-339869 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/crypto-crime-sources.png\" alt=\"Different components of crypto crime\" width=\"933\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/crypto-crime-sources.png 933w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/crypto-crime-sources-300x134.png 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/crypto-crime-sources-768x342.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 933px) 100vw, 933px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-339869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Chainalysis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding specific categories of crypto crime, transaction volumes decreased across all conventional types. However, stolen funds saw a 7% year-over-year increase. The remaining components contributing to the losses included <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/u-s-amps-up-crypto-crime-unit-to-focus-on-ransomware-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ransomware attacks<\/a>, money laundering, oracle manipulation attacks, darknet markets, scams, and pump-and-dump schemes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this array of criminal activities might appear concerning, it&#8217;s essential to consider these metrics with other benchmarks. When comparing these statistics to other metrics, the crypto crime landscape doesn&#8217;t present a negative picture for cryptocurrencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Comparing crypto crime proceeds to money laundering proceeds<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the apparent prominence of <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/crypto-crime-drops-significantly-in-2023-but-its-not-all-good-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crypto crimes<\/a>, it pales when contrasted with the global scope of cash-based money laundering. Also, it pales when compared with the daily volume of cryptocurrency transactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As highlighted in a 2016 report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europol.europa.eu\/media-press\/newsroom\/news\/europol-welcomes-decision-of-ecb-to-stop-printing-eur-500-notes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europol<\/a>, for instance, a significant 30% of all \u20ac500 notes were implicated in money laundering activities. Criminal endeavors utilized over EUR 10.4 million, primarily in the form of EUR 500 notes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, as per a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/unodc\/en\/money-laundering\/overview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN report<\/a>, the estimated annual volume of money laundering worldwide amounted to 2\u20135% of the global GDP. This was equivalent to $800 billion to $2 trillion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, these figures remain relatively low when considering the percentage of illicit transactions in cryptocurrencies. Furthermore, Bitcoin alone commanded a market capitalization surpassing $14 billion during the same period.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The case of fraud in the UK<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukfinance.org.uk\/system\/files\/2023-05\/Annual%20Fraud%20Report%202023_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fraud analysis report from the United Kingdom<\/a> unveiled staggering financial losses attributed to fraud in the preceding year. According to this report, a substantial sum exceeding \u00a31.2 billion was siphoned through fraudulent activities during 2022. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s worth noting that this figure pertains to a single nation. This implied that a global assessment could potentially reveal an even larger scale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Is crypto crime exaggerated?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the existence of cryptocurrency-related crime cannot be denied, the transparent nature of blockchain technology has facilitated the identification of such activities.
