{"id":329320,"date":"2023-07-22T07:00:50","date_gmt":"2023-07-22T01:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=329320"},"modified":"2024-04-03T10:34:36","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T05:04:36","slug":"can-liquid-staking-tokens-become-the-next-big-thing-in-defi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/can-liquid-staking-tokens-become-the-next-big-thing-in-defi\/","title":{"rendered":"Can liquid staking tokens become the next big thing in DeFi?"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><em>LSTs beat ETH to become the largest collateral asset on Aave lending protocol.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Lido\u2019s domination remained unrivalled, but other players enhanced their game.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ethereum&#8217;s [ETH] Shapella upgrade, apart from providing a fillip to staking, has unlocked new doors of opportunities for Liquid staking tokens (LST).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Realistic or not, here\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/calculator\/marketcap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">LDO\u2019s market cap in BTC\u2019s terms<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>The new buzzword in DeFi<\/h4>\n<p>According to a researcher from on-chain analytics firm <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ph0rt0n\/status\/1682060370175721472?s=20\">Messari<\/a>, LSTs have gradually begun to replace native tokens as the primary decentralized finance (DeFi) collateral on various networks.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, these receipt tokens surpassed ETH to become the largest collateral asset on top leading protocol Aave [AAVE], accounting for nearly 78% of the protocol&#8217;s total value locked (TVL). On similar lines, LST&#8217;s share on Solana&#8217;s [SOL] lending platform Solend, was found to be 89%.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_329342\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-329342\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liquid-staking-tokens-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-329342\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liquid-staking-tokens-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liquid-staking-tokens-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liquid-staking-tokens-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liquid-staking-tokens-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liquid-staking-tokens-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liquid-staking-tokens-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Liquid-staking-tokens-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-329342\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Messari<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Staking, which was once considered a risky proposition due to ambiguity over withdrawals, got a boost after the Shapella Upgrade enabled users to unstake their ETH. The resultant effect was the growth of derivatives of these locked assets, such as Lido Staked ETH [stETH], Rocket Pool\u2019s rETH, and more.<\/p>\n<p>These tokens allow users to directly participate in staking while also maintaining the ability to use them elsewhere in DeFi for higher yield opportunities.<\/p>\n<h4>Liquid staking protocols overtake DEXes<\/h4>\n<p>According to Binance&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/research.binance.com\/static\/pdf\/half-year-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Half-Year report<\/a>, liquid staking outpaced decentralized exchanges (DEXs) to become the largest sub-sector in the DeFi landscape, accounting for a 24% market share.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_329351\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-329351\" style=\"width: 697px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Binance-DeFi.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-329351\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Binance-DeFi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Binance-DeFi.jpg 697w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Binance-DeFi-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-329351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Binance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The report went on to highlight Lido Finance [LDO]&#8217;s supremacy, which held a 75% market share and retained its status as the largest liquid staking protocol. Data from <a href=\"https:\/\/dune.com\/hildobby\/eth2-staking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dune<\/a> showed that the contribution of CEXes to ETH staking declined from 34% to 20% since Shapella.<\/p>\n<p>As shown in the above graphic as well, Coinbase&#8217;s Wrapped Staked ETH has lost a whopping 23.5% of its market share since the beginning of 2023.
