{"id":291393,"date":"2023-02-17T16:00:10","date_gmt":"2023-02-17T10:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=291393"},"modified":"2023-02-17T14:03:28","modified_gmt":"2023-02-17T08:33:28","slug":"binance-us-transferred-400m-to-trading-firm-managed-by-cz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/binance-us-transferred-400m-to-trading-firm-managed-by-cz\/","title":{"rendered":"Binance.US transferred $400m to trading firm managed by CZ"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Binance transferred more than $400 million from the Binance U.S. account in Silvergate Bank.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nterestingly, Binance CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/czs-call-for-self-custody-means-this-for-binance-and-its-future\/\">Changpeng Zhao<\/a> is named as the manager in the company\u2019s documents.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent report by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/crypto-giant-binance-moved-400-million-us-partner-firm-managed-by-ceo-zhao-2023-02-16\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed that Binance reportedly transferred millions of dollars from its partner exchange in the United States to a private trading firm. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the report, the world\u2019s largest exchange had access to the bank accounts of Binance U.S. which has repeatedly claimed that it is a separate entity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Funds were transferred to a firm managed by Changpeng Zhao<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to bank records viewed by Reuters, Binance transferred more than $400 million from Binance U.S. account in Silvergate Bank based in California to a private trading firm called Merit Peak Ltd. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These transactions took place in the first three months of 2021. The transfers to Merit Peak reportedly began in 2020. Interestingly, Binance CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/czs-call-for-self-custody-means-this-for-binance-and-its-future\/\">Changpeng Zhao<\/a> is named as the manager in the company\u2019s documents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bank records further revealed that in the first quarter of 2021, Binance U.S. received $650 million from a firm named Prime Trust LLC. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the exchange\u2019s terms of use at the time, Prime Trust was a custodian firm that held a portion of the funds deposited by the crypto exchange\u2019s customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While it is unclear whether Merit Peak received funds from customer deposits, the transfer from Prime Trust indicates that the concerned Binance account received funds from an account that held customer deposits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Binance U.S. CEO had no knowledge of the transfers<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per company messages seen by Reuters, the executives of Binance U.S. were concerned about the outflow of funds. CEO Catherine Coley reportedly had no knowledge of these massive transactions that transferred hundreds of millions out of her company\u2019s bank account. In one particular message, Coley described the transfers as \u201cunexpected\u201d saying that \u201cno one mentioned them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is interesting to note that following the $400 million transfer to Merit Peak, a portion of the funds were sent to a Seychelles-based firm called Key Vision Development Limited. A corporate filing from 2021 revealed that Changpeng Zhao was the director of the firm at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to the sensational report by Reuters, Binance U.S. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BinanceUS\/status\/1626370268045225984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1626370268045225984%7Ctwgr%5Ea9e2ad744c556d76332f8d3c3a6a9984ef24f656%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.coindesk.com%2Fpolicy%2F2023%2F02%2F16%2Fbinance-moved-funds-from-us-affiliates-silvergate-bank-account-in-2021-reuters%2F\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clarified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that only the employees of the American crypto exchange had access to its bank accounts.
