South Korean authorities have seized virtual assets worth KRW 260 billion ($182 million) from tax offenders. This, according to a<\/span>\u00a0report<\/span><\/a> by Maekyung, a local news outlet. The crackdown is part of the coordinated efforts of the South Korean government to enforce tax compliance in regard to cryptocurrency and other virtual assets.<\/span><\/p>\n

The data submitted by government bodies, including the Ministry of Strategy & Finance, the Ministry of Public Administration & Security, and the National Tax Service, suggests that the total value of the seized virtual assets is worth KRW 259.791.44 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi seizures<\/b><\/h4>\n

The data also suggests that the value of assets seized in three areas alone, viz., Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province, accounts for 30% of the total value of assets seized nationwide. Virtual assets worth KRW 53 billion ($37.2 million), KRW 17.8 billion ($12.5 million) and KRW 5.4 billion ($4.7 million) were seized from Gyeonggi Province, Seoul, and Incheon, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, KRW 12.49 billion ($8.7 million) worth of virtual assets were seized from a single resident of Seoul.<\/span><\/p>\n

During this raid, a number of virtual assets were seized, including Bitcoin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Taxes in South Korea a complex affair<\/b><\/h4>\n

It was in March 2022 when Yoon Suk-Yeol assumed the office of the President of South Korea. During his campaign, he had<\/span> vowed<\/span><\/a> to de-regulate the virtual asset industry to further promote its growth. He claimed,<\/span><\/p>\n

“To realize the unlimited potential of the virtual asset market, we must overhaul regulations that are far from reality and unreasonable.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In July 2022, the government<\/span> announced<\/span><\/a> that it is delaying the introduction of the planned 20% tax on virtual currency gains over $1,900 by two years, i.e. 2025.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

However, the tax rules of South Korea give authorities power to seize digital assets and sell them at the current market price to recover the tax arrears.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
