{"id":257444,"date":"2022-09-14T00:00:03","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T18:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/?p=257444"},"modified":"2022-09-13T17:56:22","modified_gmt":"2022-09-13T12:26:22","slug":"fidelity-mulling-over-bitcoin-reveals-this-about-institutional-investors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/fidelity-mulling-over-bitcoin-reveals-this-about-institutional-investors\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Fidelity mulling over Bitcoin&#8217; reveals this about institutional investors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston-based financial services giant <\/span>Fidelity Investments<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is reportedly mulling over the option to let its retail clients trade Bitcoin in their brokerage accounts, which add up to more than <\/span>34 million<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fidelity-weighs-bitcoin-trading-on-brokerage-platform-11663008698\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Wall Street Journal, <\/span><\/a>Mike Novogratz<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Galaxy Holdings Ltd, one of Fidelity\u2019s earliest crypto clients, has indicated that the firm is poised to venture into Bitcoin for individual brokerage customers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novograz while speaking at the SALT NY Conference said \u201c(Fidelity) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is going to <\/span>shift<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their retail customers into crypto soon enough\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Not Fidelity\u2019s first crypto venture<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This wouldn\u2019t be Fidelity\u2019s first foray into crypto. The company has been involved in Bitcoin <\/span>mining<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since <\/span>2015<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has a considerable stake in Marathon Digital Holdings, one of the largest Bitcoin mining companies in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, Fidelity made Bitcoin available to <\/span>hedge funds<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other institutional investors, followed by its own crypto fund in 2020 for wealthy clients. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company made headlines earlier this year when it announced that corporate clients would be able to add <\/span>Bitcoin<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to their <\/span>401k<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> retirement accounts. This was a major move, considering that Fidelity caters to retirement plans of <\/span>23,000<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This move drew flak from the United States Department of Labor, with officials raising concerns about the allocation of a volatile commodity like crypto in the retirement accounts of its citizens. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S authorities may not be too thrilled about Fidelity\u2019s latest move, seeing as it increases crypto exposure to retail consumers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Paradigm shift<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until a few years ago, Blockchain and crypto conferences used to be popular among retail investors, with so-called crypto bros and individual blockchain enthusiasts in attendance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more recent conferences have seen participation from big money like banks and pension funds, who usually avoid <\/span>high-risk<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> products like crypto. While participation may not look like a big deal, the fact that institutions are now actively looking into the crypto space is indicative of a paradigm shift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.kpmg\/content\/dam\/kpmg\/sg\/pdf\/2022\/09\/pulse-of-fintech-h1-22.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published by <\/span>KPMG<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pointed out that retail investors accounted for the majority of the investments in crypto prior to 2018. \u201cSince then, the investor profile has changed, with institutional and corporate investors now accounting for a much larger share of investment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking on companies remaining undeterred in spite of the bear market, the report added, \u201cwhile the crypto space experienced significant challenges during the first half of 2022, crypto-focused companies attracted <\/span>$14.2 billion<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during H1 &#8217;22\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bank of America came out with a report on 12 September that claimed an<\/span> increase<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adoption of Ethereum by institutional investors following the M<\/span>erge<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scheduled for this week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fidelity\u2019s crypto arm, Fidelity Digital Assets, revealed in May this year that it plans to hire more than <\/span>200<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people for tech roles in order to develop the company\u2019s infrastructure to support multiple cryptocurrencies, starting with Ethereum.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Boston-based financial services giant Fidelity Investments is reportedly mulling over the option to let its retail clients trade Bitcoin in their brokerage accounts, which add up to more than 34 million accounts.
