Here&#8217;s the explainer you need.<\/p>\n<h4>Will EU say &#8220;eew&#8221; to more regulations?<\/h4>\n<p>Coinbase issued a statement calling on readers to make their voices heard before the EU&#8217;s vote on applying the travel rule to all crypto-transactions. Coinbase&#8217;s release <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/making-your-voice-heard-ahead-of-thursdays-critical-eu-vote-f03730e83e5c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Another dangerous provision would require exchanges to inform \u201ccompetent authorities\u201d of <em class=\"ku\">every single<\/em> transfer from a non-customer\u2019s self-hosted wallet equal to or greater than 1,000 EUR \u2014 regardless of any suspicion of bad activity.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iampaulgrewal\/status\/1508233227034525696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">There are also concerns<\/a> that this interpretation of the travel rule &#8211; which makes it mandatory to collect data on crypto transactions &#8211;\u00a0would affect self-hosted wallets, affect innovation, and lead to the surveillance of exchanges.<\/p>\n<h4>Pack your bags &#8211; and wallets<\/h4>\n<p>A proposal submitted to the European Parliament in February 2022 stirred up controversy when it suggested the removal of the 1,000 Euros limit. It also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/CJ12-PR-704888_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Criminals are able to carry out illicit transfers and avoid detection by structuring a large transaction into smaller amounts using multiple seemingly unrelated wallet addresses, including one time use wallet addresses.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the exact voting day is not yet official, a win for the amendment could mean that financial institutions participating in crypto-transactions would have to record, maintain, and submit information to the authorities for <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/european-parliament-proposes-expanding-travel-155953099.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>all<\/em> crypto transactions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, how valid are authorities&#8217; fears? <a href=\"https:\/\/go.chainalysis.com\/rs\/503-FAP-074\/images\/Crypto-Crime-Report-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chainalysis&#8217; report<\/a> on crypto-crime revealed that &#8220;Cryptocurrency-based crimes&#8221; hit an all-time high in 2021, with illicit addresses sucking in $14 billion in stolen funds.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Chainalysis <a href=\"https:\/\/go.chainalysis.com\/rs\/503-FAP-074\/images\/Crypto-Crime-Report-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pointed out<\/a> that &#8220;transactions involving illicit addresses represented just 0.15% of cryptocurrency transaction volume in 2021.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The EU&#8217;s focus on collecting data on crypto-transactions could also be a side-effect of the Russia-Ukraine war. Especially since it has seen millions of dollars in crypto flowing in to support Ukraine. Additionally, Chainalysis also <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/after-the-russia-ukraine-war-is-there-a-crypto-conflict-on-the-cards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported threats<\/a> from the pro-Russia ransomware group Conti.<\/p>\n<h4>PoW ban goes Ka-POW!<\/h4>\n<p>Europe has a loaded history with crucial crypto-related legislation. Most recently, the\u00a0EU\u2019s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-03-14\/eu-crypto-proposal-seen-as-de-facto-bitcoin-ban-fails-in-vote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took a vote<\/a> on some draft legislation that could have severely curtailed proof-of-work crypto mining.
