Reportedly, 29 wallets were affected. However, the bug was later fixed. Well, this has added more pain to the increasing list of DeFi hacks.<\/p>\n<p>The Li project\u2019s bug was exploited at 02:51 AM (+ UTC) on 20 March 2022. Among the 10 stolen currencies were USD Coin (USDC), Polygon (MATIC), Tether (USDT), and AAVE (AAVE).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">TLDR:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 ~$600K have been stolen from 29 wallets<br \/>\u2022 User don\u2019t have to do anything<br \/>\u2022 Bug has been fixed and is already deployed<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fqOxJxDrZs\">https:\/\/t.co\/fqOxJxDrZs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; LI.FI (@lifiprotocol) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lifiprotocol\/status\/1505738407938387971?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 21, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h3>Is DeFi safe?<\/h3>\n<p>The Li Finance hacking is understandably a new concern for DeFi uses. The number of DeFi exploits has been skyrocketing since the start of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>In the chart below, one can see the increasing crimes in the crypto sphere with more than $3.2 billion stolen in around 250 thefts. Notably, $2.3 billion of the amount was stolen on the DeFi platforms. There was a 6x increase in DeFi centric attacks in 2021 as compared to 2020.<\/p>\n<p>For these rising DeFi exploits, Chainalysis cites the main reason to be the reliance of DeFi platforms on open-source software.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223525\" style=\"width: 1093px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-21-at-1.31.30-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-223525 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-21-at-1.31.30-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1093\" height=\"729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-21-at-1.31.30-PM.png 1093w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-21-at-1.31.30-PM-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-21-at-1.31.30-PM-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-21-at-1.31.30-PM-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1093px) 100vw, 1093px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chainalysis&#8217;s The 2022 Crypto Crime Report<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div>\n<p>Furthermore, price oracles is another issue cited by Chainalysis.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Secure but slow oracles are vulnerable to arbitrage; fast but insecure oracles are vulnerable to price manipulation. The latter type often leads to flash loan attacks, which extracted a massive $364 million from DeFi platforms in 2021.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Also, Chainalysis noted,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 2021, code exploits and flash loan attacks\u2014a type of exploit involving price manipulation\u2014accounted for a near-majority of total value stolen across all services at 49.8%. And when examining only hacks on DeFi platforms, that figure increases to 69.3%.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Code audits were thought to provide a potential solution for the thefts. However, according to Chainalysis, \u201caudits aren\u2019t infallible.
