Especially now that cross-chain bridge Wormhole has reportedly suffered an exploit worth over $326 million.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u203c\ufe0f The wormhole network is down for maintenance as we look into a potential exploit.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udce2 We will provide updates here as soon as we have them.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\ude4f Thank you for your patience.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Wormhole (@wormhole) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wormhole\/status\/1488976115750383626?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 2, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The platform, one facilitating token transfers between <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/tag\/eth\/\">Ethereum<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/tag\/sol\/\">Solana<\/a>, and other platforms without an intermediary, suffered a loss of 120,000 wrapped Ether (wETH) tokens on the Solana side of its bridge.<\/p>\n<p>While the Wormhole team has assured the community that ETH supply will be added back on the platform to &#8220;ensure wETH is backed 1:1,&#8221; a definitive timeline on the same is yet to be released, along with how the additional ETH will be procured.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The wormhole network was exploited for 120k wETH. <\/p>\n<p>ETH will be added over the next hours to ensure wETH is backed 1:1. Thanks for your patience.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Wormhole (@wormhole) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wormhole\/status\/1489001949881978883?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 2, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The hack was first pointed out by community members due to large transactions taking place on 2 February. The culprits <a href=\"https:\/\/etherscan.io\/address\/0x629e7da20197a5429d30da36e77d06cdf796b71a#internaltx\">minted<\/a> 120,000 wETH on Solana, out of which they converted and redeemed 93,750 into ETH. It was worth around $254 million. The hacker used some funds to buy SportX (SX), Meta Capital (MCAP), and later, Usable Crypto Karma (FUCK), and Bored Ape Yacht Club Token (APE).<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the wETH was converted into SOL and <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/tag\/usdc\/\">USDC<\/a> on Solana, post which around 432,622 SOL now remain in the hacker&#8217;s wallet.<\/p>\n<p>According to Paradigm security researcher \u201csamczsun\u201d, the network has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/samczsun\/status\/1488974372756987906\">reached out<\/a> to the hacker&#8217;s address. In doing so, it offered the culprit a $10 million bug bounty if the funds are returned. The request read,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is the Wormhole Deployer: We noticed you were able to exploit the Solana VAA verification and mint tokens. We\u2019d like to offer you a whitehat agreement and present you a bug bounty of $10 million for exploit details, and returning the wETH you\u2019ve minted. You can reach out to us at contact@certus.one\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As for the platform&#8217;s current state, its team has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wormholecrypto\/status\/1489036273012682753\">assured users<\/a> that the vulnerability has now been patched, even if it remains non-operational as of now. While no other assets or chains served by Wormhole have yet been affected, blockchain security firm Certik <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/cryptocurrency\/blockchain-bridge-wormhole-loses-nearly-320-million-in-apparent-crypto-hack-12343952.htm\">believes<\/a> the Terra side of the bridge could also be exposed to similar vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p>While it is the <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/bscs-qubit-finance-suffers-major-attack-loses-80-million-from-pool-funds\/\">second<\/a> smart contract hack to take place this year, this episode is also the second-largest DeFi exploit to date. It only fell short of <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/biggest-defi-hack-ever-the-story-so-far\/\">Poly Market&#8217;s exploit<\/a> in August last year, which cost the platform over $600 million. Thankfully for the network, most of the funds were <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/mr-white-hat-shares-private-key-for-remaining-141m-in-stolen-poly-network-funds\/\">returned<\/a> by the white hat hacker for a modest $500,000 &#8220;security bug bounty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Overall, however, DeFi hacks have emerged as a major concern for the industry. 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/certik-releases-2021-state-defi-144200119.html\">witnessed<\/a> an all-time high &#8211; $1.3 billion worth of assets lost &#8211; a 2500% increase from 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While 2021 was inarguably the year of DeFi hacks, 2022 is fast catching up to its predecessor.
