While many hoped the new year won&#8217;t bring more bad news, it would seem that this may just be the start.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Base layer\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Cross-chain router protocol <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MultichainOrg\">Multichain<\/a> (formerly Anyswap) is currently trending, although for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">2\/If you have ever approved any of these 6 tokens, pls log in <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S9nDfrM1eO\">https:\/\/t.co\/S9nDfrM1eO<\/a> asap to revoke the approvals, otherwise, your assets are at risk.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Multichain (Previously Anyswap) (@MultichainOrg) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MultichainOrg\/status\/1483110396089483265?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 17, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>On 17 January, Multichain Bridge Protocol<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/multichainorg\/action-required-critical-vulnerability-for-six-tokens-6b3cbd22bfc0\"> discovered a bug<\/a> or rather a critical vulnerability on its network. Security firm Dedaub <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/multichainorg\/action-required-critical-vulnerability-for-six-tokens-6b3cbd22bfc0\">reported<\/a> to Multichain that users who had approved permissions for WETH, PERI, OMT, WBNB, MATIC, and AVAX on Multichain\u2019s bridging router were at risk of hackers draining their funds. At the time, to avoid losses, the Multichain team <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MultichainOrg\/status\/1483110396089483265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">advised<\/a> users to cancel all of the approvals given to the specified tokens.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Multichain <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/multichainorg\/action-required-critical-vulnerability-for-six-tokens-6b3cbd22bfc0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">published<\/a>\u00a0a step-by-step tutorial on how users can easily revoke approvals. Furthermore, the blog\u00a0reported that all assets on its V2 Bridge and V3 Router were safe. Users could carry out cross-chain transactions as usual.<\/p>\n<p>Later down the line, however, Blockchain security firm PeckShield investigated the affected protocol. As per its investigation, a total of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeckShieldAlert\/status\/1483363515411099651?s=20\">445 WETH (&gt; $1.4M)<\/a> was affected.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>More on the way<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Well, that&#8217;s what hackers thought of this situation. The aforementioned episode took an interesting turn. Hackers continued to exploit the vulnerability in the cross-chain bridge Multichain.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, they went on to steal about $3 million in cryptocurrencies, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/epxb8m\/crypto-protocol-publicly-announces-flaw-users-relentlessly-owned-by-hackers\">report<\/a> by Vice. Calling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/epxb8m\/crypto-protocol-publicly-announces-flaw-users-relentlessly-owned-by-hackers\">incident<\/a> &#8220;the worst way to treat a vulnerability,&#8221; Vice&#8217;s Franceschi-Bicchierai <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lorenzofb\/status\/1483928455590858757\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The hack against Multichain users keeps getting worse.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Tal Be\u2019ery, the co-founder of the ZenGo wallet, the stolen amount amounted to,<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MultichainOrg?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MultichainOrg<\/a> hack is far from being over.<br \/>Over the last hours more than additional $1M stolen, rising the total stolen amount to $3M.<br \/>One victim lost $960K!<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fYhYxUojB8\">https:\/\/t.co\/fYhYxUojB8<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Gvh5hB6t6s\">pic.twitter.com\/Gvh5hB6t6s<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tal Be&#39;ery (@TalBeerySec) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TalBeerySec\/status\/1483898136678617089?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 19, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alas, that&#8217;s not it. Different reports\u00a0 have now emerged signalling at the lack of transparency from the affected protocol&#8217;s side. For instance, consider this &#8211;\u00a0Chainlink commentator and podcast host ChainLinkGod.eth 2.0 alerted the same in a tweet. He included screenshots from a Medium post indicating that &#8220;funds were safe and unsafe at the same time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I can\u2019t be the only one who\u2019s incredibly confused by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MultichainOrg?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MultichainOrg<\/a>\u2019s messaging here <\/p>\n<p>Schrodinger\u2018s funds, both safe and unsafe at the same time <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AW8s8aAhHk\">pic.twitter.com\/AW8s8aAhHk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Zach Rynes | CLG (@ChainLinkGod) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChainLinkGod\/status\/1483822911043473412?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 19, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In addition to this, \u201cdrarreg17\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/drarreg17\/status\/1483760292643610631?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">asked<\/a> Multichain what it is going to do to &#8220;compensate users like myself who were affected by the exploits?\u201d However, the protocol is yet to reply to the request.<\/p>\n<p>Worth noting though that the company reached out to the original address that has been holding over 450 ETH in stolen funds since 17 January. Meanwhile, as per Defi Lama, the <a href=\"https:\/\/defillama.com\/protocol\/multichain\">protocol handles<\/a> &gt;$9 billion worth of assets across 14 different blockchains.<\/p>\n<p>Well, one thing is clear.
