In fact, in return for &#8220;responsibly disclosing the bug,&#8221; Polygon <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0xPolygon\/status\/1451206245306753028\">revealed<\/a> that it has extended a bounty of $2 million to Whitehat <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/g3rh4rdw4gn3r\/status\/1451170536613052422\">Gerhard Wagner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Immunefi, a DeFi bug bounty platform, went on to add that it is the highest bug bounty ever paid out in history.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As promised, we broke another record. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/g3rh4rdw4gn3r?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@g3rh4rdw4gn3r<\/a> found a bug in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/0xPolygon?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@0xPolygon<\/a>&#39;s plasma bridge that could have resulted in an $850m loss if exploited. <\/p>\n<p>The bounty payout is the largest: $2m. <\/p>\n<p>Bug fixed. Everyone is safe! <\/p>\n<p>A real win for all.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1fqd4ul3uO\">https:\/\/t.co\/1fqd4ul3uO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Immunefi (@immunefi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/immunefi\/status\/1451172696243511299?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 21, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>According to Immunefi, Wagner submitted a bug report earlier this month, one that affected the Polygon Plasma Bridge. A report released by the platform <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/immunefi\/polygon-double-spend-bug-fix-postmortem-2m-bounty-5a1db09db7f1\">stated<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The vulnerability allowed an attacker to exit their burn transaction from the bridge multiple times, up to 223 times.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was essentially a double-spending bug affecting the &#8216;Deposit Manager&#8217; on the network. We know that Polygon enables interoperability with the Ethereum blockchain. The security weakness was found in the withdrawal procedure that verifies the burn proof of transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Polygon subsequently fixed the breach in about a week&#8217;s time after receiving the report from Immunefi. Apart from the bug bounty, Polygon has also <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/immunefi\/polygon-double-spend-bug-fix-postmortem-2m-bounty-5a1db09db7f1\">paid<\/a> a commission to Immunefi for facilitating the bounty program.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What could have happened if the bug was not found earlier?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In case the plug had been delayed, a huge deposit of ETH tokens through the Polygon Bridge could have resubmitted a withdrawal procedure 223 times.<\/p>\n<p>Wagner <a href=\"https:\/\/gerhard-wagner.medium.com\/double-spending-bug-in-polygons-plasma-bridge-2e0954ccadf1\">explained<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A malicious user can leverage the issue to create alternative exits for the same burn transaction and perform double spends on the Polygon network.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here, it is noteworthy that there is a waiting period of seven days before a user can claim back funds to their Ethereum account. Therefore, after the waiting period, a malicious user with an initial deposit of $200,000 can end up <a href=\"https:\/\/gerhard-wagner.medium.com\/double-spending-bug-in-polygons-plasma-bridge-2e0954ccadf1\">receiving<\/a> an additional $44.6 million for the same transaction.<\/p>\n<p>A point of clarification, however. Polygon offers two bridges &#8211; The Plasma bridge and the PoS bridge. The bug was found only in the former protocol.<\/p>\n<p>Lately, Polygon has been seeing tremendous growth in developers. In fact, Alchemy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlchemyPlatform\/status\/1450870760193486848\">revealed<\/a> in a recent post that active developers are growing by over 60% every month on average.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/argument-g87ad2592a_1280.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-193815 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/argument-g87ad2592a_1280.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"770\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/argument-g87ad2592a_1280.png 770w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/argument-g87ad2592a_1280-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/argument-g87ad2592a_1280-768x439.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the month-on-month usage has grown by over 145%, as of October.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Whitehat hacker recently disclosed a critical vulnerability on Polygon, one that could have resulted in losses to the tune of $850 million.
