It would act as a so-called &#8220;financial blockade&#8221; for the U.S. At least, that&#8217;s what the government claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, crypto tokens such as Bitcoin played a crucial role mainly to offset hyperinflation in this region. Last year alone, the annual inflation rate reached 6,500%, causing Venezuelans&#8217; lifetime savings to go up in smoke. At the same time, data from crypto trading platform LocalBitcoins showed <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/localbitcoins-volume-skyrockets-venezuela-100031786.html\">cryptocurrency trades paid for with Venezuelan bolivar<\/a> were also surging.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to now, Venezuelans can buy flight tickets using cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">According to Freddy Borges, director of the Maiqueta International Airport, the adoption of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/cryptocurrency?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#cryptocurrency<\/a> as a payment method for airline tickets in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Venezuela?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Venezuela<\/a> may be on the horizon.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/crypto?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#crypto<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bitcoin?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bitcoin<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/btc?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#btc<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/binance?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#binance<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/bnb?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#bnb<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VQbZDJFPgI\">pic.twitter.com\/VQbZDJFPgI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; CryptoListingPro (@CryptoListingIN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CryptoListingIN\/status\/1447493779284320260?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 11, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Sim\u00f3n Bol\u00edvar International Airport, or &#8220;Maiquetia&#8221; is <a href=\"https:\/\/elsiglo.com.ve\/2021\/10\/09\/freddy-borges-director-del-aeropuerto-internacional-de-maiquetia\/\">working towards adapting its payment system<\/a> to receive some cryptocurrencies as payment for airline tickets and other services. As reported by the regional news agency El Siglo, director Freddy Borges stated,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We will activate a button for cryptocurrency payments in the airport platforms and commercial activities, in coordination with Sunacrip.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It aims to incorporate Bitcoin, Dash\u00a0and\u00a0Venezuela\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.bmx.fund\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360053776674\">oil-pegged digital currency<\/a>, the Petro. Borges highlighted the importance of establishing these payment methods to facilitate the purchases of tourists that might come to the country in the future.<\/p>\n<p>He told that the airport must advance towards the implementation of these new tools that the tourists might use.\u00a0Sunacrip, the national cryptocurrency watchdog will regulate the\u00a0use of these cryptocurrencies as payment methods.<\/p>\n<p>The Maiquetia International Airport is one of the most important civil airports in the country, receiving passengers from 17 different international destinations.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this, several airports and airlines around the world have been exploring ways to introduce crypto payments and blockchain-based functionalities in recent years. In March, Latvian airline airBaltic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbaltic.com\/en\/airbaltic-bitcoin-payments-extended-by-various-crypto-currencies\">started accepting<\/a> Ether (ETH) and Dogecoin (DOGE) as payments for tickets. Meanwhile, Turpial Airlines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aviacionline.com\/2021\/08\/venezuela-turpial-airlines-aceptara-bitcoins-para-la-compra-de-boletos\/\">incorporated<\/a> Bitcoin for tickets purchase in August.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, crypto payments have started to see traction all across the globe. Not only in El Salvador, but several regions have showcased a similar interest.
