In fact, according to an industry report by <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptoparrot.com\/article\/almost-5-000-new-cryptocurrencies-launched-in-the-last-12-months\">Crypto Parrot<\/a>, there were 4,908 cryptocurrency launches over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing, the crypto-market had around 12,046 cryptos with a cumulative market cap of over $2 trillion.<\/p>\n<h4><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A 68.75% increase!<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/5000.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-186414 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/5000.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"943\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/5000.png 943w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/5000-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/5000-768x421.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 943px) 100vw, 943px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A lot of the recent momentum in the space is the result of institutional investors now seemingly warming up to cryptocurrencies and DeFi. For instance, Fidelity Digital Assets\u2019 2021 <a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/bitcoin-has-these-factors-to-thank-for-its-growing-institutional-appeal\/\">report<\/a> showed that 84% of U.S. and European institutional investors are interested in holding digital assets. Moreover, 70% of respondents in Asia already have cryptocurrencies as part of their institutional portfolios. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A growing number of fund managers are now offering DeFi products as part of their portfolio mix too. In many ways, the DeFi rush has been very similar to what was seen during the altcoin boom of 2017-18.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Is the market too saturated now?<\/h4>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The current boom is not without critics, however. In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/billionaire-paulson-who-shorted-subprime-calls-crypto-worthless-bubble-1.1645666\">interview<\/a>, hedge fund manager John Paulson cautioned investors against crypto-investments. He said,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;I would say that cryptocurrencies are a bubble. I would describe them as a limited supply of nothing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the contrary, other industry commentators are seeing signs of maturity in today&#8217;s crypto-market. According to Investor Anthony Pompliano, adding more tokens to the ecosystem has a positive <a href=\"https:\/\/pomp.substack.com\/p\/the-token-density-theory\">effect<\/a> on existing tokens. In fact, also believes that &#8220;d<\/span>ensity drives demand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">BitGo CTO Benedict Chan shared similar sentiments, when addressing what is becoming a highly saturated crypto-market. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Sob3S8lLciE\">said<\/a>,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Having a consolidation of developers and talent, going towards strong projects could be a good thing for the entire industry.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since the launch of Bitcoin in 2009, several second and third-generation cryptocurrency projects have debuted in the market. If we look at the performance of Bitcoin over the years, it has always reigned on top of the capitalization charts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now, the first-mover advantage may be at play here. But, the fact remains that BTC hit its all-time high of over $64,000 in 2021. Needless to say, altcoins, whether new or old, have a long way to go before they can even dream about displacing Bitcoin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Success isn&#8217;t universal<\/h4>\n<p>It is, however, worth noting that the boom is not without its shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>At least 2,047 cryptocurrencies had failed by May this year, <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coinopsy.com\/dead-coins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to Coinopsy. While some of these alts were part of a scam or a joke, on the contrary, the rest died a natural death due to lack of volumes and liquidity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The cryptocurrency space has been seeing another boom lately, despite increasing regulatory scrutiny.
