Growth lead at Kraken, Dan Held, stated that Bitcoin is currently experiencing a supercycle, which could cause the asset\u2019s price to surge to $1 million. <\/span>In a recent interview<\/a> Held explained what exactly this supercycle represented. According to him ever since COVID-19, people have “lost faith” in existing financial institutions and in governments, which is why the current Bitcoin cycle is “different:”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The previous market cycles for Bitcoin, those speculative run-ups that we saw in 2011, 2013, and 2017. <\/span>Those all were macro bull run and macro being the rest of the world. <\/span>But then we had COVID hit, and when COVID hit, we had money printer go brrr<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According<\/a> to Held, the pandemic was a catalyst to bring Bitcoin’s value proposition into a global perspective. It could perhaps be a reason why <\/span>Bitcoin could even run “a semi-normal cycle,” that propels BTC price to “$200,000-$400,000.” However, Held predicted a 20% to 30 % percent dip could follow and claimed that this bear market may not be \u201cas intense.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Because this time around we have institutional buyers who buy and hodl.We have retail buyers who buy and hodl. People aren’t just in it for a speculative run anymore. People are buying it because they see Bitcoin’s value. So that’s where I think we might see a less intense bear market.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Moreover, Bitcoin may not have “a normal cycle\u201d due to mass adoption. Now that there are many options to buy the asset, unlike \u201chard\u201d times back in 2017 and 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, <\/span>French economist, <\/span>Marion Laboure<\/span><\/a> predicted that future generations \u201cmay usher in mass adoption.\u201d Deutsche Bank <\/span>survey<\/span><\/a> found that among millennials, cryptocurrencies are increasingly replacing cash and bank cards. <\/span><\/p>\n

The economist concluded that in the long run, \u201cthere will likely be little room\u201d for using crypto as a \u201cwidespread means of payment,\u201d especially when central banks may not give up their \u201cmonopolies.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Held believed a similar notion and stated <\/span>that it \u201cis really too early\u201d for the \u201cmedium of exchange era\u201d where people use Bitcoin for everyday payments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He said that for the medium-of-exchange era, three criteria need to hold: where more people hold Bitcoin, coupled with a decline in price volatility, and people\u2019s sustained belief that the crypto is \u201creal money.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Held predicted that it would take “a decade or two” <\/span>where Bitcoin as a medium of exchange becomes another use case. He explained<\/a>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Long term, as Bitcoin becomes universally held by everyone to store value, then eventually they’re going to want to <\/span>go spend it. And if the volatility subsides and there’s a huge network effect, let’s say like 50+ percent of the population owns <\/span>it, then network effects start to kick in where other people want to receive it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
