Any cryptocurrency or a blockchain project advertised with the title of XYZ-killer is particularly popular. Ethereum, the world&#8217;s largest altcoin, is often the target of such dubious comparisons. The latest to do so is Coinbase after it recently published a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.coinbase.com\/around-the-block-10-eth-killers-and-new-chains-a712c04c344f\">blog<\/a> that identified 9 blockchains it classified as &#8220;ETH Killers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the said blog, these smart contract platforms are emerging competitors that have the potential to challenge Ethereum\u2019s dominance in the space. What is also interesting is that a few of these popular platforms have already been referred to as &#8220;ETH Killers&#8221; by some in the crypto-community. Alas, some have been left off this list, including Cardano, Binance Smart Chain, and VeChain.<\/p>\n<p>Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson was quick to comment on the exclusion of Cardano from this list, stating, &#8220;It&#8217;s extraordinary to me that Cardano was omitted here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#39;s extraordinary to me that Cardano was omitted here. Happy to host a workshop for you guys to learn more about our protocol and its USPs. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/d1yk2nyu4U\">https:\/\/t.co\/d1yk2nyu4U<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Charles Hoskinson (@IOHK_Charles) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IOHK_Charles\/status\/1337616335434620929?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 12, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The report in question instead mentioned the likes of Algorand, Polkadot, Cosmos, and several others, of which Polkadot is undoubtedly the most popular chain, with a market cap of $5.5 billion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_131048\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-131048\" style=\"width: 939px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/coinn.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-131048 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/coinn.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"939\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/coinn.png 939w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/coinn-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/ambcrypto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/coinn-768x439.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 939px) 100vw, 939px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-131048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: The Coinbase Blog<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In fact, as the report revealed, the combined market cap of all the chains mentioned represented only 25% of Ethereum\u2019s market cap of $70 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Ethereum\u2019s dominance in the space is almost all-encompassing, but it comes down to its first-mover advantage and its ability to successfully capture these <a href=\"https:\/\/eng.ambcrypto.com\/ethereums-competitors-take-the-crown\/\">network effects<\/a>. For these reasons, building on Ethereum helps remove some of the associated risk variables for a developer on the network.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, in recent times, the ecosystem has witnessed quite a few \u2018migrations\u2019 from Ethereum to other blockchains. The most recent case was the example of Human Protocol\u2019s migration from the Ethereum blockchain to the Polkadot parachain, Moonbeam.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Head of Operations Lonnie Kurlander had said,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The [Ethereum] mainnet simply could not support our customer requirements and the volume of transactions that already take place daily.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As the report suggests, ultimately, it is a question of whether applications need to &#8220;live&#8221; within the same blockchain environments.
